Having just completed a year and 40,000k's travel around half of oz, I want to begin a poster of my route. Just in the preliminary stage at the moment... hoping that people will come up with ideas on what looks good and works well.

Obviosuly, I could just get a blank map, and draw a line in texta, but am after something more in depth, and a project ongoing that can be added too when the 2nd half is tackled in a year or so.

Met somebody who used a string and pin system that apparently looked the goods.

Would even look at 3d maps. Something colour coded based on the regions... with reasonable detail, but not every town and road.

Any positive feedback on this is appreciated...Where to buy the map, how to do etc.

Cheers All

I have an Australia Map bought here from EO Shop. It came laminated. I then had it professionally mounted on a board and it hangs in my room

The routes taken over 37 years throughout Oz are marked in texta.

Wow! That would be a sight to see Willem. You should post a pic of it on here...

I spoke to a good mate of yours on my travels actually.

Big german fella from Warraweena conservation pk... his name ecapes me now,. but he's a bloody champ. I gave him a beer, and he downed it in one, and I thought, man, this guys can drink... but he never has more than 2, as he has responsibilities in the park. Guess he likes em when he gets to have them huh?

Saw old rosie too...

The drive up the mountain is beautiful, well worth doing for anyone going to the Flinders.

Cheers

That's right, Stoney Steiner,he's pretty stocky though!

I got my axe stuck in some of that red gum and he insisted on promptly coming along with a chainsaw and getting it out for me. As well as providing all the wood we could burn, and some great tales... for less than most camps in oz!

One of the many great people I now know all over oz.

I've got the Australian Geographic 'Australia for Adventurers and Dreamers' map. It has most of the outback tracks on it like the CSR, Anne Beadell etc and sufficient detail, is laminated and mounted on the wall, 31 years of travel have created a texta spiderweb on it but still plenty to cover.

I've got Discover Oz mapping software & open all tracks at the same time so I have OZ 3/4 finished in the last 12 months. But I can only print it out to A4 size.

goodday wheeltravel

i use the hema aussie map laminated but i made up a board with 3 ply and then stuck cork tiles on it so i use different colored drawing pins to stick in no force needed and eassily moved or removed
use big drawng pins for major stops and little ones for trails and tracks

Hey guys,

That sounds like a similar system to what I heard form this couple on the road. They used string in between pins too. I think the cork backing is a great idea... cheers

Wheelie, My map is a Laminated Hema Terrain and Road map that is stuck to a back board with silicon and then has some rustic looking timber frame around it. It hangs on the Family Room wall with pride of place. Texta will come off after a while so I got some thin black striping on a roll from a stationary shop and stuck that on our travel routes. I think it looks pretty good and other EO'ers that have seen it have also commented positively.
