Hi all,

I think my fan clutch is RS, when I start up from dead cold the motor warms up to 3/4 on the gauge and the fan is just skipping over, when I give it a rev, the motor rpm increases, but still can't hear the fan biting into the air.

I turn the motor off, and fan spins for a few seconds after motor stops.

Can anyone please tell me:
1. What is the name/type of oil that is used in the clutch
2. How much of it do I need and how do I replenish it once I remove the clutch assembly

I can't find any info in the archives on this.

Thanks in advance

G'day mate,
The operation of your fan clutch sounds normal to me. It is normal for it to free-spin after you turn the motor off (for a few revolutions anyway).
If you're meaning that the temp gauge is going up to 3/4 on the dial just from warming it up (ie: without having done any hard driving), I'd be much more concerned about the whole cooling system than the fan clutch.
The fan clutch won't start "biting the air" until the whole thing is getting very hot; usually only at slower road speeds, when the flow-across effect of the air through the radiator is insufficient to get the coolant to cool down in the radiator.....after all, the only job the fan has to do is "pull" air through the radiator when the road speed in not fast enough for there to be natural air flow.
As for the oil, I believe the way to go is to get 3 vials of Toyota fan clutch fluid and put them in......but as I said, i think there'd be other things to look at first......temp gauge sender unit for starters if it's goiung up to 3/4 just after start up.
Good luck
Roachie

G'day Roachie,

The rest of the cooling system seems to be ok, evidenced by the fact no water loss occurs, and while driving the temp stays normal also indicating that the thermostat is operational. Both top and bottom radiator hoses are hot once the thermo open also indicationg flow is ok, radiator is only 12 months old, and water/coolant is clean as.

From startup, it takes the usual few minutes to reach operating temp, but instead of the fan starting to bite the air at idle once just above normal operating temp, it just continues to spin at a slow pace, even when giving the engine a rev, the fan is barley turning over.

fan should NEVER free spin like that. I have seen it once on a 4by I had just bought and it was overheating. 1.5 vials of toyota silicone fixed it.

Swine Hunter, I agree with your diagnosis, the fan clutch is fubar. When you initially start the car in the morning. Can you hear the fan on startup? If it's functioning correctly you will hear it for up to 30 seconds until the silicone gets to where it needs to and will then quieten down.
When turning the engine off, the fan should stop within two or three revolutions.
Regards Andrew.

Hi Andrew,

Yes the fan locks up and spins quickly when dead cold for about 30 secs, then clutch backs off to allow engine to reach operating temp. When first started the fan can be readily heard biting the air.

S.H. my gq temp had been sitting just above 1/2 and well up to 3/4 when climbing hills or towing, flushed the system, no difference, so i replaced fan and clutch, guage hasnt gone past 1/4 since, cost $450 though. good luck.
