Hi all! I have a 1992 RB30 Patrol Wagon with the 3.0l naturally aspirated Nissan Skyline petrol engine. 200,000 km on the clock but still going like a charm, across the Simpson and many trips North all with no problems, except for POWER!! There aint much. In 92 I had a Speciality Tuning (Vic) ST11 extractor kit fitted and then Russell Guest 4x4s carby tune. A big improvement from standard but still no powerhouse. I have debated about a new 4WD but I am loathe to get rid of the RB30 as it is such a great vehicle, roomy, comfortable and reliable.
Has anyone got any suggestions for performance improvements or improvers? I would love to keep the old girl but as we are planning a long trip possibly towing a camper trailer we need that extra bit of power. HELP!!!

Holden made a factory turbo for that motor and nissan a factory twin turbo system on their GTR skyline. Might be worth making enquiries at a few wrecking yards to see whats available. The turbo commodore was a great fun car to drive ...the GTR was awesome.

Ive got a 95 RB30 with a carby - it was very ordinary when I got it. Ive improved it with a Hiclone and extractors, the hiclone making the biggest increase in power. I also replaced the inline fuel filter with a diesel style with a glass water trap after having to spend a unplanned night in the bush, because of bas fuel.
I looked into the turbo and EFI option and theres a guy in
melbourne who specialises in doing that engine (VL commodores mostly) - ask around the 4WD shops.

New to this site , so only read your question today. I have an RB30 and think its almost best 4wd around and would be if it had power.
I went through the carby mod stage and it works but is far to peaky, so I did my own conversion to add VL commodore fuel injection and tossed out the carby. This gives least peak power but better low down torque, particularly when your down to 600 revs. At this point carby's dont give you and fuel but fuel injection keeps putting in the petrol even though its rich because of lack of air flow. I got the conversion checked by a crowd in bayswater and it delivered lower emissions than standard.
But it still has not enough power so I an trying to locate the code for computer so I can re-map it.

Thanks Robin. I have also thought about fitting fuel injection but there was an article in 4x4 mag (I think) about a year ago on a company in NSW who would do the conversion if you supplied them the parts. The graph they gave for the improvement in performance showed that the gains were minimal for the cost so I forgot the idea. I will try to find the article and send it to you if you can give me a fax number or similar. Maybe a chip upgrade would be the go.
I agree! The RB30 is a great 4WD but a bit more oomph would make it even greater.

After having done both and having them dynoed I would probably agree with such an article. You get about 10% more power @ 4000 and about 20% more at 1000rpm. When I went done carbie mod path I got 30% more @ 5000 and it went like a little racer for only $250. However the car was less effective as a 4wd so I converted to EFI for $1000 and lots of time (making little brackets and figuring out the curlies like the in tank fuel pump has to be ditched). The EFI improved the mileage and general driveability.
The EFI now offers the possibility of add on supercharger or improved computer control. As a computer engineer I would like to modify the computer program if I can find the source code.

Do you get any solution to improve power in your Patrol BR30?
I am grom portugal, I have one to, with 60.000Km only, but my carburator seems to be not working
well. I have very low power, I removed the AC too, but still lazy.
I regarded last week that the secondary chamber in the carburator seems to be not feeded with gasoline, it as a black dirtyone look, in contrast of the primary chamber witch looks very clean. Is it normal?
I am considering in geting an Commander950 (300cfm) from Holley (www.holley.com), to upgrade the carb to an EFI fuel injected.

Hi Victor! Welcome to the Nissan RB30 discussion. I do not know which state that you live in but ring Russell Guest 4x4 in Fairfield,
Melbourne, on 03 9497 3899 and ask for Russell. He is able to 'trick' up your carby to give improved performance. A decent set of extractors also should help but after that improvents get a bit more difficult. Read the other replies to my original question and then stay tuned to ExplorOz to see if anything further unfolds in the RB30 power saga. Good luck.
