I'm sure I've seen this subject mentioned, but couldn't find a reference even in forum archives.
My series 80 has a VERY annoying squeak from around the barn door area; the slightest bump when driving sounds like a nest of rats squeaking.
It stops now and again, but I've just driven 8 times from Caboolture To Sarina over the last months (that's 16,000kms) and I'm near to needing a straight jacket.

Anyone any ideas before I go completely nuts?
I've tried jamming a mat in the door, silicon on all the rubbers, WD40 on all the potential rubbing metal bits, nothing seems to work.

Oh, and I can't reproduce when I stop the car and shake it, before you ask.

Have a nice day.

Mine does it about once a year and I managed to get rid of it with a bit of WD40 in the latch, however check this out anyway, as you say WD40 has not worked for you:

Wazza,
Well, I suppose what I said was not quite right, SOMETIMES WD40 will work for a while, maybe minutes, maybe days, but the squeak always comes back eventually !
But thanks for the feedback.

I can't help. Never was a problem till after my last trip. Brought the nest of rats home and nothing seems to shift them. Tried same as you no luck.
maybe someone can keep us both from going insane.

The toyos not like a jackaroo is it ? , they have a spring loaded plastic wedge under the door to hold it up when shut, and they can squeak like buggery until you spray a bit of silicone into it. So yeah i know the 'insanity maker' noise..

PS thats one flash lookin trailer you've got there.

Thanks, Bradley. All the feedback so far points to the catch, but it's amazing it deosn't respond to a little lubricant.
The flash trailer is our lifeboat when civilisation gets too much . . :)
Hopefully the squeak won't come along too.

Doug
Ihave a friend with a 80 series who had the same problem. When I had a look the rubber stop at the bottom of the frame that the door closes on was missing.I put the stop back in and poblem fixed. If it is missing you should see a mark where it used to be---just a thought!!

Gordon,
The rubber stops (bottom & top) have been targetted with silicon, but I can confirm they are both there, and the silicon doesn't improve it.
Thanks for responding.

Hi Doug,
Had same problem with 93 Cruiser, went to Toyota dealer and got replacement door latch for door. Dealer new about problem and told me that it was a common problem, cost about $80.00 from memery. Money well spent as it stopped me going insane.
hope this helps,
David
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Well, well, so Toyota know all about it, hey?!.
$80 would be worth it, but this almost deserves a recall

Doug
The rubber bump stops that you refer to are the cause of the squeek that is driving you nuts,I guess the wear in the catch is what allows it to happen, the rubber stop becomes glazed to the extent that you can play a squeeky tune on it with just your finger, the squeek is the rubber stop rubbing on the paintwork,A friendly gent in a caravan park using tarzans grip glued a small dot of rubber on my vehicle where the rubber stops touch the paintwork , no more squeeking that was two years ago.

Convert it to a dual cab.
Problem solved...(might cost more than $80 though)

Doug, I had the same problem and solved it by getting hold of some half inch irrigation poly pipe. The stiff you put little sprinklers on in the garden.Cut a piece about 30mm long, slit it open, and remove enough of it so that it wraps itself around the latch on the car. Hold it on with a couple of cable ties.Lasts about 5000 k's before you have to turn it a bit so the latch is sitting on new plastic. Hope this helps.

I don't know about the barn doors but my 80 Series wagon doors had a similar problem. Squeaked from Gladstone to Darwin and back and drove me crazy. I replaced the lock mechanism (About $100 from memory and 20 mins to fit) Problem solved. Best $100 I ever spent.

Well, Guys, I'm impressed by all the suggestions.
Tomorrow we set off for Sarina again (from Cabolture).

I think I will target the catch with Dock's suggestion of some polypipe (as it seems to be the cheapest one !; I siliconed the rubber stops today and it went away for a while but came back again. The combination of a slack catch causing rubber stops to move seems logical. (I assume we're talking about the right hand barn door here)

I'll report back after the trip which will be in about a week's time (moving house, changing ISP etc).

I won't give in - am I a man or a mouse .. . squeak . . :)
