Hi all,

Thought I would share my Sunday afternoon experience with the forum.

There is an old quarry near my place in Brisbane. Sure some of you know it, the one off Paradise Road. Well I got bored so thought I would go down and take a drive. Haven't been there in six months and never on a Sunday afternoon. Well it was BUSY. I saw about 20 4WDs and 50 trail bikes getting around.

Well I just idled around in 2WD until I came across a sand track that was in the bottom of a large gully. As I hadn't droppped tyre pressures or locked the hubs in even, the Rodeo bogged down straight away. So I get out put the hubs in and continue on my merry way. Problem is I then bump into a 60 series Cruiser and some Kiwis. They were contemplating driving up one of three tracks that took you out of the gully but were side by side and all joined the same track up the top. Three different tracks and three different grades. An easy, a medium and a not bloody likely!!! The easy was cut into the edge of the gully and had the longest but most gentle slope and step at the top. The medium was rutted and steep but short. The not bloody likely would have required a hummer as otherwise your bullbar would touch the slope before your front wheels did!!

Well I thought this will be a walk in the park. I chose the medium route and got up it easy. Problem lies though in that the bloody track gave way under my Rodeo where the step for the easy track was. The rear of my ute slid dangerously to the right and I was only saved from a roll over by the front not dropping off the track so as to sort of swing the ute like a pendulum. This was the biggest lean I have had this ute on so was a little concerned at first. Anyway after literally jumping down from the drivers seat (never thought I would have to do that in the Rodeo LOL) the Kiwis and I thought it would be best to turn the wheels right and attempt to drive out of the predicament. I moved about 1 foot. Oh well. I set the winch up and was out of there no worries.

Don't know how long I would have been there without the winch. As I had blocked not only the medium route but the easy one also. I could have been towed forward but I don't know of any other way to get to that location except for this one and I was blocking the way up!

Had a lot of fun though. Before you ask, I didn't have my camera. I know, I was upset too but I didn't think I would need it :-)

I did cop one little dint. It is in the rear left corner. I have a styleside body so it is on the bottom edge of the tray and you can't see it unless you get down on the ground. Funny thing is that there was already a smaller dint there from a previous off road trip.

I think I could have driven out if I had a front locker as the front was in not to bad a spot but had very little weight on the front left.

Well it's the Paradise Road in Acacia Ridge that comes off Learoyd Road. When driving down Paradise Road from this end the road goes from bitumen to dirt. When it returns to bitumen there is an old gate on the RHS which is always open these days. There are some other ways of getting in and out which are a bit further along but this is the main entrance.

It is an old sand quarry (the current one is next door to it) so the ground can be very hard or drifty sand. Even when water is around the base is solid so no difficulty there. I can pretty much go anywhere on the site but just like the 4WD parks there are different ways of getting to the same places with varying degrees of difficulty.

A lift kit wold be beneficial however I think lockers would be cheaper and more benefical. I was looking at getting a lift from EFS myself but have since thought that lockers would be more benefical for me. A winch would be a necessity if you plan going alone as you can see from my original post. On a previous trip about 1 year ago I got hung up but managed to free myself without resorting to winching.

It is a fun place to spend couple of hours.
