Hi all,
We are embarking on our first (very long) road trip for all of June, leaving home in the
Adelaide Hills and heading up to
Katherine /
Kununurra. Taking in all the sights along the way and knocking off the Tanami Rd and Binns Tracks on our way back home. We'd like to explore Kings Canyon on our return loop (
Kununurra /
Lake Argyle / Wolf
Creek Crater / Tanami Rd) and were wondering if anyone has come in to the McDonnell Ranges / Kings Canyon from the Tanami Rd without having to go all the way back to Alice and out again? Thanks kindly for any input.

Hi
I think your only option is to turn onto the
Gary Junction Rd 50kms south of Tilmouth Roadhouse and travel about 90kms towards
Papunya and then t/o towards Haasts
Bluff, down to Namatjira Way, down to Larapinta Drive and then along the
Mereenie Loop.
In 2023 we did this in reverse towing a caravan but turned west on the
Gary Junction. The roughest section was
the Loop which required a $5 permit for the pleasure.

Rather than the
Mereenie loop that is renowned for its corrugations you could take the
Boggy hole trek ( finke gorge N.P) you can find that under
treks down the bottom in the index , it's a beautiful drive through there but is not recommended for towing . Although people do .

In my view, you could not possibly do justice to that plan in less than 3 months.

Hi Peter, thanks for your opinion. I was reaching out for advice and suggestions only on a way in to the McDonnell Ranges from our position on the Tanami Rd. Everyone's 'ideal' way to spend a month on the road is personal and unique to them; this is our journey and as we love driving and keeping moving, I'm sure we'll do it the justice we have planned to, in our own unique way.
Happy Travels,
Cheers.

Graham and Nick, thank you both for your helpful suggestions, we will go back to the maps and have a look at both of these options.
Thank you kindly.

Be aware that part of the
Gary Junction section and the road towards
Haast Bluff both require seperate (free) permits to be obtained in advance.
Cheers,
Peter

The most common route to access Kings Canyon from the Tanami Road is via the
Mereenie Loop Road. This road connects the Tanami Road (near Tilmouth
Well) with the Luritja Road, which leads directly to Kings Canyon.
