Kingoonya to Mt. Ive station

May 25 I will be travelling from Kingoonya to Mt. Ive.. A new trek for me and I am seeking any relevant but up to date information about what to see out there. I have travelled Googs a number of times and would like to cross this one off the list as well.

Not quite "up to date". :)
We first drove that route in a Mini in 1970 on the way to Uluru. No difficulty.
Driven it several times since. It can be a tad stoney and/or corrugated depending on the grader timing, but it is a "road" rather than a "track".

We would usually come south from Kingoonya via Hiltiba (which is owned by the Nature Foundation). They have some great camp sites and walks. That area is an extension of the Gawler Ranges NP which is very much worth a few days.

Another alternative if you have the time do the reasearch and to organise the permissions with the stations is to come down the east side of Lake Gairdner from Wirraminna to Mt Ive. A really nice drive.
Cheers,
Peter

Thanks Peter good information. I didn't realise it was a maintained rd. Permission would be from Mt.Ive at a guess?

The direct road from Kingoonya to Mt Ive on the west side of Lake Gairdner is a public road.
The road on the east side is (mostly) private station roads and requires specific permissions from Wirraminna, Mahanewo and Nonning (not Mt Ive).

While in that area a visit to / or a night spent at Waltumba Tanks is well worth the effort.
We’ve done it a couple of times after the Speed Trials on Lake Gairdner combined with a trip via Ceduna up Googs to Kingoonya

Really decent bit of road. At Waltumba Tank there is a track across to the lake with a nice view of the lake

In June 2024 we traveled from Kingoonya south along the Gawler Range Road, turned left onto Skull Camp Tanks Rd (SCTR), through Moonaree Station. About 30 south of the southern Moonaree boundary we turned right (Pondanna Ruins) and headed towards Yardea Station. We were traveling with a caravan, the Gawler Range Rd was a shocker, 4 hours to cover nearly 100km, corrugations and rocks. I was tempted to lower the pressure in the tyres but because of the amount of gibbas (rocks) i was concerned I would end up tearing the side of the tyres so I slowed down and kept the tyre pressures where they were. The SCTR was great, cruised at about 70kph. Mt Ive is about 30km south on the Nonning road from where we turned off towards Yardea. Beautiful country, would loved to have spent more time look along the GRR but I couldn't take my eyes off the road because of it's condition.

If you're into photography, there are some cracking spots around Lake Gairdner
