Bula everyone,
I'm thinking of upgrading the Sprinter roof to something like this:

What do you reckon?
Anyone know the insulation R rating of palm fronds?
Just need to figure out how to manage the solar panels.
Maybe on a trailer?
Vinaka

The local Fijian busses are much more interesting.
We volunteered in Fiji for 2 years in 2010-2012 and used them a lot. They had a habit of breaking high pressure diesel injector lines and spraying diesel over the exhaust manifold which immediately caught fire. Having no windows was the only reason most people weren't fried.
Some also played movies for entertainment. Problem was the screens were in full view of the driver and he would usually prefer to watch the movie than the road.
I recall one morning when several of the staff were late getting to work. When questioned, the told us that the bus driver kicked everyone off the bus 1km out of town because he had been told that there was a safety inspector waiting and the bus had no brakes.

Cheers,
Peter

Day Peter
My kids went to school on those busses and never heard a harsh word about the drivers, I think some of them now drive in Melbourne.

Allan.
Insulation qualities aside. Do you intend to use Sikaflex Panel adhesive for the brackets or simply short TEK screws? Solar panels can also be attached with either option! You could use a Bowen option and have alternate panels of thatch and Solar. Trendy!

Haven't got down to that detail yet. I thought that maybe it would just sit in place.
There appears to be some quintessence in Fiji that just binds everything together.

I found some old rusty Tek screws yesterday and they would Blend nicely with the that Thatch colour, if you need them for the build!

The registration plate denotes the number of safety features on the bus.

Ensure that the wiring from the solar panels is thick enough to carry the load, or it might catch fire.

Good idea. I dont think an engineer could sign off on the mod but I reckon an arborist should be able to inspect and sign off.

Recyclable, renewable and rainproof too. Should be a winner and very much in agreement with 21st century Green thinking. BTW it looks more like ti tree than fronds, but whatever it is, thatching is the way to go. You can plant your own grove in the backyard and never be short of replacements..... W
