Oyster Light Covers

Just wondering if anybody knows if it's possible to replace the old-fashioned frosted light covers on the oyster ceiling light in our older caravan. Looking for clear covers that don't block so much of the light. We are new to caravaning, having been sailors for more than 3 decades.

There are a couple of things you can do to increase your lighting. The first is to replace the incandescent 240 V globe with a LED replacement if you are wanting to retain the 240 V operation. The LED replacements produce far more light output with less heat.

If you are looking towards 12 V operation, replace the complete fitting - 12V LED Oyster Light with Switch

I do not know of any replacement glasses from new suppliers. My last supplier only has the Replacement PVC Knobs that hold the lens in place now.

G'day,
We have 4 vans from the 70's on our bush block. I have a 240v off grid supply & like Peter advised I swapped out for 240 v LED globes. WAY better light output & much less drain on the off grid system.
A few covers were broken & NLA so just bought some new Oyster light fittings from Bunnings & replaced the old ones.

Cheers

A problem is that there were many different styles of those oyster fittings so finding a correct replacement could be difficult and possibly impossible. You could approach a caravan repair business but they would probably recommend that you purchase new units.
Refitting with new units would have the advantage of upgrading to LED style.

Hi and thanks to everybody. I should have said we already have LED globes in the lights. I have some night blindness, so anything less than bright daylight makes it hard for me to see properly.

I will take all the comments on board and start looking around. We live in Cooktown and the shopping for parts etc happens only online. There is a local camping store, but no caravan parts stocked.

Regards

Sorry, still trying to work out how to use this site! I should have said we already have LED globes in the lights. I am partially night blind and can only see well in bright daylight conditions. Even overcast causes me some hassles. We live in Cooktown so all shopping for van parts etc happens online - we do have a camping shop but it's not big enough to stock light fittings etc.

Best wishes and thanks for all the suggestions

Given that you already have LED's, you would still need some sort of diffuser wouldn't you? LED's through a clear cover would be pretty harsh.

You could try looking at what's available from Caravansplus Light fittings. They have an extensive range of caravan spares. I usually just pick up from the warehouse but they have a good reputation in getting gear to customers.

I agree with Bushranger 1. I found a light on the side of the road, not far from a Bunnings store and it is Oyster style and I believe they are available in different sizes/dia. The one I have has LEDS which are switchable between WARM White and Cool White and is powered by a 240/to lower voltage 125V led supply. I initially thought it was 12.5V but with the large number of LEDS inside it IS NOT 12V to LEDS, so locked to 240ac operation. Worth looking at the Bunnings site to see sizes etc.
