Hi Guys,
Using a Samsung Galaxy S21 ultra in my car when off road and I have found since moving from QLD to WA recently that the GPS accuracy is really bad.
I did a run recently from
Albany to
Caiguna via Kalgoorlieand some some off road tracks and found that the GPS location was up to 200 meters out, made it really difficult to isolate some track entrances and found myself constantly turning around or missing a track completely.
If I zoom down to 18 it seems to be ok but that is way to close for some spots. I like to sit the zoom around 13 to 15 so I can whats coming.
How can I resolve this?

Hi Troy,
Is it the GPS in the Galaxy S21 that is not accurate? If it is, then perhaps you need to contact Samsung and ask them.

If a couple of apps are ok but one isn't then it would appear to be the app at fault as there all using the same gps.

If it OK as you say, at one zoom level, then I think it would be accurate for all levels. Some other issue I think.

Screenshots showing the issue would be good?
At zoom levels it can be pretty deceiving where the actual track turn is.. the marker looks to be right on the road but when you zoom in you've still got a few 100metres to go.. when coming up to a waypoint I always zoom in a lot to give me the best visual representation of how far I have left until the turn. No fault in the software.

Thanks for everyones
feedback, Ive run some tests and I'm thinking it's just the GPS. I keep getting a message saying GPS signal is poor which is probably causing this.
It seems to work at some zoom levels so I will let it be for now and see how it goes.

Where in the vehicle is the phone situated when in use?? If not receiving plenty of satellites ALL OF THE TIME the accuracy WILL often SUFFER . Also if you then are trying to find turnoff and you Slow Down. The satellites then have enough lock time to increase the accuracy as you then are zooming in. Travel at high speed to the turn off, and I would expect it to be worse. The phone position may be a critical issue to moving accuracy! Gotta see those things in the sky!

It sits on the front pillar just inside the windscreen where it has been for about two years. This only started to happend when I moved from QLD to WA a few months back, also getting more GPS signal poor messages even when outside.
Only thing I can think of is it could be the case, I changed that over to a quadlock case, could it be hte case causing the GPS to not connect properly?

I have no idea what a Quadlock case is, but if it has ANY metallic content, or magnets/magnetic material in it's cover or spine etc , it would surely interfere with the signal. Being NOT in clear view, but is therefore effectively behind a METALLIC pillar in a vehicle. Because of the receiving angle presented to the sky, by it's proximity to the pillar, it will most definitely affect the number of satellite signal streams available to process. More the better. Just because phone reception may work with it on a pillar, it doesn't mean satellite nmea info gets there as easily. The GPS uses the difference "in time" to receive the same signal from various satellites, to determine where it is on the planet. If you restrict the info streams then it will be inaccurate compared to it's true ability with full satellites available and reading all of them. Some of this goes without saying. your positioning or case might be the problem!

Quote.."I dont think its the phone, google maps and waze are spot on all the time." Both these apps will be obtaining an extra satellite location from your connected data ,hence for the accuracy . You should try another nav app to determine your issue like the free OsmAnd or download a GPS Status app from the play store to
test your inbuilt gps .
Check your phones Location settings , Cog wheel /Location /App Permission / allow -while using the app / then switch on use precise location .Im going to assume its the app your using and one of the reasons i have dumped it.

@Stephen L, That's not necessary. The Galaxy S21 has much higher spec gps than a inconvenient bluetooth gps . It supports GPS, Glonass, BDS, Galileo where a Garmin Glo and Bad Elf uses GPS and Glonass. Unless you want to pay $400 for the Bad Elf Pro used by pilots

.
The Quadlock cases have metal locks and the Quadlock Mag has a magnet in it which I'm sure would cause problems. Take the case off and try it.

If you read the reply from Troy he uses his phone and no mention what so ever of a Samsung.
And yes for the record I use a Blad Elf the same and most accurate for Avionics

Stephen L Maurice beat me to it!
I the first sentence of the heading it is a SAMUNG and S21 I believe. so YES he did mention the phone type and Designation.
Allan B has confirmed what I thought would likely be the problem. "If I wrap my phone in aluminium foil the GPS reception is very poor". Under a metal roof it has nothing too. Strange that!

Your speed has little to do with satellites needing "lock time". Satellites do not "lock". The receiver (phone) does. The more satellites the phone or device can receive - the more accurate the navigation solution. The same satellites are used by aircraft travelling at over 800km/h, so speed is not an issue.
I would suggest it's either a phone or software limitation.

I reckon it will be the maps. I had a set of maps that were always way off, it's all to do with the gps coding saved in the map file. There may be app settings for those maps that need to be altered to suit the coding.

Once again we have a “Spammer” trying to infiltrate our
forum with non approved advertising. Moderator button required back so that these people can be easily identified to the moderators for fast action. Henry F response is just another blatant advertisement.

David and Michelle,
I understand that the Help Desk via the bottom set of menus is available, and is what you now prefer, however going this way creates more steps. We also have to then include the post ID number, and the answer ID number. Whereas before with the Moderator button, it was already linked to the post ID and the answer ID.
Obviously, I do not know all the “ins and outs” of how the website works, and what was involved with the “moderator” button, but it just seems that we now have extra steps involved in reporting these issues.
