Treck, Track

What's the difference between a track and a trek? All the tracks I save are personal treks but just show a point to a point route between camp sites. Shown as a straight line.

If I open an Explore Oz trek it shows the actual route but not overnight stops

How do I show the actual route and overnight stops?.

Have saved the two options as a word file to explain the difference but can't upload.

G’day Mepvic

Q1.. A track is something that you have driven, recorded the data and then saved as a personal track.

A Trek is something you create on your device to drive at some point.

Q2 .. A Trek does not show overnight stops.

Q3.. As above.

Q4.. Not sure why you would need to save the two options to upload, the help guide is available offline, or try it as PDF.

Thanks TrevorDavid. Good to chat again. We met in Alice if you remember.

Rather than have two separate views of our journeys, I would prefer to see the actual route and campsites on the one file.
Have attached two copies of part of a trip to the Cape. TrekA shows our overnight stays. We don't actually camp at wineries but by some coincidence, there is always a glass of wine where we stop. Route between camps is just a straight line. Some non EO friends thought we actually drove between points, not flew.
Second shot, TrackA is the same trip but doesn't show the campsites.
TrackA with TrekA campsites would be a much better presentation for us and friends following our journey.

Yes I remember meeting you at Alice. From memory you were heading west for the wild flowers, and yes good to chat again.

First screen shot Trek A. I note this was back in 2014 which is before ExplorOz Traveller days. Also all the wine stops are ExplorOz places. Have you plotted them on the Trek?

Second screen shot Track A. When did you drive this? If it was recorded and saved via ExplorOz Traveller the overnight stops should be there. In segments there should be a tab to highlight to show overnight stops. ( unless something has changed that I’m not aware of).

If you have places (wine stops) you could put them into a folder, then whack the recorded Track into the same folder. Actually anything to do with the drive at all into the same folder. Highlight the folders tab and that particular folder and everything will appear on your map.

Yes Trevor, That was us. There was a server issue and you advised to separate my trek/track into two files.

Copies of the files attached. This was in 2022 when EO Traveller was up and running.

Wine stops still being shown. EO place type of wineries a good waypoint for an overnight stop. Always a glass of wine at our overnight stops.

Segments in the track log do show the overnight stops but I would prefer to see them on the map. Easier for friends and family also.

I don’t use the Desktop App so can’t help with that at all.

I don’t think it’s possible to transfer the overnight stops from the server map into ExplorOz Traveller App, although I do like that idea.

If you have waypoints / places , for the overnight stops the folder option described earlier would the best option.

Edit.. Family & friends can see the overnight stops on the track on the website.

This App never ceases to amaze me, the overnight stops are actually there in the App which I was not aware of.

Simply open your track log, tap the marker icon left hand side of the bin icon.

Hi mepvic
You are not alone. I too find this part of ExplorOz somewhat difficult to understand and use effectively. I look forward to reading the responses and hopefully get a clearer understanding. At this stage I don't even bother saving my routes (tracks, treks, or whatever) on EO for this very reason. A bit sad really as it is an otherwise excellent app I feel.

Thanks Roy. I've responded to TrevorDavids comments and added a few pictures. Would much prefer to see our campsites shown on a map with the actual route taken rather than just a line between points.

Yep, got home a couple of weeks ago from a 5,500km journey to Outback NSW & SA. I didn't understand the difference between Track and Trek or that there was a difference. I had setup a trek of basically where we wanted to go and when I got home I was very disappointed that it showed a trek that was at least 40km from the route we actually took. I actually found a photo that I had taken when on the (not shown) track just to prove which track we were on. I was on the verge of contacting Michele when I discovered 2 previous tracks and another one that was still open. I closed and saved #3 then found it was exactly the route that we took and showed nightly stops etc.
I was just about to spend an hour or two playing with EO when I thought I would check the forums to see if anyone else had this problem. Bingo, I'm not the only one that was caught. I love the app but I think I need a user manual!

A trek is a journey, a track is the route you followed.

Thanks DickyBeach.

Main issue is in showing camp sites on our actual track, not as point to point

Thanks to Trevor all my queries sorted. Your right Trevor, a bloody great App.
Attached couple of photo's showing which button to press in the track log and the result.

Have a play. Info in the segments includes date, distance travelled and average speed.

Don't even need to fudge my Trek display with glasses of wine.

Bit late but I tend not to reply to Forum as I know people will reach out to me directly via the Help desk or phone if they need my input.

However, I see a bit of confusion here that thought it might be worth clearing up.
It's long - because I'm trying to make it extra clear and have to describe multiple things being: Treks, Track Logs, Tracking.

TREKS- Both ExplorOz Treks & Personal Treks are built to provide:

1. an document showing a trip plan/route you intend to drive
2. the supplied ExplorOz Treks give information about the preparation requirements, fuel, supplies, history, permit requirements, advice about conditions and best time to visit. For Personal Treks there are fields for you to add this information yourself if desired.
3. guided navigation prompts to take you along a planned route (online OR offline)
4. a list of waypoints (Places) are built into the Trek - these may be navigational waypoints, planned overnight stops, or points of interest to stop at.

You can look at TREKS on the website (online) or in the app (downloaded version for offline use). They are designed to provide inspiration, trip planning guidance and route files to follow. All Treks have 2 ways of being used:
1. just open to view/read the information, view the driving directions cue sheet, and view the whole route on the map.
2. use the Trek for active navigation. Select a Trek - click the green route icon - then click BEGIN NAVIGATION. If the Trek was created with turn by turn routing calculations these will be used even when offline. This cannot be done on the webapp - you need the store version of the app installed on a device with GPS (phone, tablet, iPad, headunit etc)

So - TREKS are routes that have been made and designed to show you a trip plan. If you have made a route plan yourself using the app you have to press SAVE to complete the process of saving it as a Personal Trek to use in the future. The file is stored in your online account so that it can be downloaded to any device via the Data Manager in the Traveller app.

TIPS: a Trek can use auto routing driving directions if made online. Save this file to use in the future. When following a Trek offline, all the auto routing and driving calculations that were extracted to make it are retained - no straight lines but if you try to edit it whilst offline or create a new trek whilst offline you only get straight line guidance. The app cannot access the auto routing database offline. If you want to get accurate distance offline between places, then use the Ruler to trace the road you want to travel.

TRACKS - We use the term "TRACK LOGS" as they are a recorded file (hence LOGGED).
Any time a device is moving whilst the Traveller app is running, it will be recording positions (tracking). These positions are constantly being stored in a hidden database in the app that you can access after the trip to export to create a TRACK LOG of where you've been. (Menu - Export Positions). Once exported, the Track Log format gives you a lot of data - it will automatically split the activity into daily segments if it detects multiple days of movement, and you can click the option to show overnight stops, it will also display all the travel metrics/stats such as distance travelled, avg speed, slope, gain etc.

There is also the provision to create TRACK LOGS from other data such as:
1. imported GPX files
2. saving from the active server tracking map (Members only feature)

App users with a Membership subscription can enable the TRACKER service to setup an automatically syncing stream of position data from their device to your online account on our server. These positions are then format on the website automatically to display a tracking map showing your entire active journey. This therefore is a safe backup of your tracking data, and can also be used to share your journey progress with others. This is what we do when we travel. When doing this - others can see the daily stops on the map as 1, 2, 3, 4. You can also view this yourself in the Traveller app (open menu - select Tracker & Settings).

If you click the SAVE button shown below your active tracking map - this creates a TRACK LOG but it clears your tracking map ready to receive new syncing tracking data. You should be SAVING in-between trips. ie. after your return home after a trip, before the next one. Or anytime you just want to stop recording whilst travelling.

ACTIVE TRACKING

We often post our live tracking map which shows where we've been, where we currently are etc. It shows people your day's avg travel speed, active travel speed, where you've been and where you were when the app last synced your position. So if you have been offline for the past 3 days, the last position displayed will be 3 days ago, but people can see that this was 3 days ago and the date. When you get Starlink connected or you get mobile data, your tracking will update to that point etc.

So it sounds to me like this is what you want.
You will need:
1. a Membership subscription
2. either the Traveller app (or Tracker app)
3. Enable the Tracker - and start travelling
4. View your tracking in the app, or view on the website
5. Share your tracking

If you need further instructions, please read the relevant Help Guide.
The map below shows active tracking. I shared the link so anyone that has the link could see the live updated map showing trip progress without us needing to do anything. When the trip is over, we can click SAVE to export the file to a the TRACK LOG format where we can do more with the data presentation and it is easier to analyse the data/stats.

So I suspect your problem is viewing TRACK LOGS - you won't see overnight stops unless you go into SEGMENTS and click the option to show overnight stops.

Hope this helps. I am a bit confused by your post sorry - not really sure what you want to achieve or what you are showing in the images but hope my explanation of what the app can do helps you decided how to use the tools. If not, please try to read the Help Guides to get the terminology right then contact me via the Help Desk or Phone and we can talk more.

Best regards Michelle
EDIT: oh I see Trevor has helped with your initial query and you've got what you were after in Track Logs. Still will leave this here as it may answer other questions/clarify misunderstandings others may have.
