I am thinking of getting a navigation system setup including gps unit, laptop computer and maps. I would like ideas on which combination would be best to get. We want to set it up in our 4wd. We have garmin gps unit which is about 3 - 4 yrs old. Would it be compatible with equipment which is newer

Jule, look to make sure your laptop has a serial port. It does not need to be faster than 600-700 Mhz - 4-10 Meg hard disk is fine, 256 Meg RAM be good but not essential. I find a 12" screen tops too. That can be 2-3 year old gear, or more. No need to spend mega$

with gps trackmaker (free download, search google) you can get going very cheaply, and as
john mentions, no fancy gear is required. if you laptop has usb only, get a converter from serial 2 usb from dicksmith. should be a breeze to set up.
good luck.
