Good news, especially for those wanting to cross between east & west Kimberley this upcoming tourist season. I expect this will be welcomed by many who have until now been unable to plan such a trip.

New crossing looks plenty wide and solid enough for towing an offroad van/trailer across, not just a single 4WD. Lets hope it dries out soon after last nights 12 mm rain at the airport . Lots of storms in catchment giving 50 to nearly 100mm so river may rise in next day or so. Nearby river gauge still out of action 3 months after flood.

Would love to see a pic of the OLD low-level crossing, or what's left of it.

Here is one site Low Level
If you Google 'fitzroy crossing low level crossing' you will get more.
Apparently it was still usable until a couple of years ago.

Rod, that's how I remember it from my last zap across it (except for the water level ...) - heavily silted up and real powdery like bulldust. Was wondering what it looks like after this year's flood, as it survived many above-the-banks ones before.

Bit of a hiccup.

Crossing closed

You’d think they had had enough rain.

I'm really disappointed in the WA roads authorities and the Government there. I just can't understand why they haven't reached out to all the people on various social media and listen to them on how to build bridges and roads that will survive these floods.

Apparently they shouldn't have even opened that new dirt crossing as they should have known that it would be washed away again. The local residents should not have expected to be able to access shops etc in Fitzroy Crossing until the river had dried enough that a permanent new crossing could have been built.

And don't get me started on apparently why the Australian Army wasn't called in immediately to construct a Bailey bridge while the river was still flowing high and fast.

It's amazing the numbers of highly qualified people that exist in this country who for some reason do not get employed in these specialist workforces. Most though seem to live in southern capital cities and where their specialist skills are in daily use on the streets of Melbourne etc. Many of them are in a hurry to get to the northern areas of Western Australia on holidays to see their skills put to good use in various campgrounds and are most unimpressed to find out that the slack WA authorities are impeding their ability to get around this country and that they may have to alter their plans and make more use of the Nullarbor route, maybe twice.

These same experts are incredulous as to why so many thousands of kilometers of flood prone roads weren't constructed like long bridges to allow flood waters to flow unimpeded beneath the roads. It's high time that Authorities listened more to the untapped potential experts that this country has.

PhilD, so true. But unfortunately not enough votes to justify the expense of proper roads.

I am not sure if “Bailey Bridges” are suitable for fast flowing waters.

G'day All

A bit off topic but I did an Aboriginal Culture Tour run by a father and son team on the Fitzroy River about 15 years ago I'm guessing. They had two aluminium flat bottom boats with the tour lasting about four hours where they gave some amazing insight into the Bunaba people, their customs, their tribal law and numerous other very very interesting traditions !

Just wondering if they were still going or if not when did they stop and if anyone else on here has done that tour ?

Thoroughly enjoyed that experience !!

Cheers

Gazz
