Mitchel Plataeu - Track opening time

Hi

Just wondering if folks can share their experience of what is the " earliest" the Kalumburu track usually opens. Obviously it will vary year to year, just after a guide.
Also, has anyone headed further up from Kalumuru and if so where and what was it like.

Thanks for your time.

Regards

Lyndon

PS, not looking at this year so hopefully Covid won't apply.

Hi Lyndon,

It has been a long time ago now, 2004, but we stayed at Honeymoon Bay campground when Les Foster managed the place, I believe his grandson manages it now. The road between Kalumburu and Honeymoon Bay was quite sandy but in good condition, we were there in June if I remember correctly. As far as the Kalumburu Road opening time is concerned, you will probably have to check with Kalumburu itself. As for the Kalumburu road conditions, we’ll as you said it changes greatly, what is good conditions yesterday, could easily be badly corrugated tomorrow. You will also need to check if they are opening to tourists at all. Some of the tourist places in the Kimberley are not opening at all this year, mostly due to a lack of workers.

" Honeymoon Bay campground when Les Foster managed the place, "
That was Lesley French. :) We enjoyed some great chats with Les.
ps... that is NOT a beer in his hand.

This is one of Les's grand chldren in 2006. Not sure if he is the one running Honeymoon now. Might still be a bit too young?

We visited Kalumburu for 6-8 weeks each year from 2005 to 2008 inclusive.
We were never there before June (although it may have been possible) and we have never been into Bell Gorge to this day because it was never open when we were there.
I have seen caravans at Honeymoon and a Coaster at McGowan Island Beach on one occasion.

There are other tracks out from Kalumburu, but apart from Pago Pago, you will need local approval and that may be difficult to get. We have been fortunate to see some.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the correction. Les’s grandson was quite white, he was a budding actor, only about 18 or 20 years old at the time, but was having difficulty getting rolls as an aboriginal owing to his very light skin colouring.

Les was a great bloke, he came around every day for a chat. We stayed for several days, and had a great time. Didn’t catch any fish from the beach, we didn’t have a boat, so was a bit disappointing on that front. Although one of the other campers, a fellow Victorian came back with a couple of Mulloway which he shared with us. They were quite large, and we had fish for quite a few days. We also went out crabbing with him and scored a few good size “muddies”.

I think I might recall that bloke. There were a bunch of grandchildren.
We took a boat in 2006 and again in 2008. Would not go there to fish without one. The fishing was spectacular once you learned a bit about the water.

We also did some local touring by water in 2008. Including up into the Drysdale River from the mouth.

Cheers,
Peter

Not the question, but may be relevent?
The Pentecost is rarely a problem, but the Durack can be pretty deep early after the wet.
These are the only 2 significant rivers on the GRR.

And the King Edward River on the way to the Mitchell Falls can be quite deep, quite fast and very rough early in the season.

Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter

Thanks for the info. What sized boat did you take out there with you to head out to the Islands and up the Drysdale?

Cheers

It was a 4.2m MAC (rotomoulded plastic) with a 70hp outboard.
We towed it due west from Brisbane to Marble Bar.

It was my son's. He visited so we had to let him catch a couple of fish :)

We had done some exploring in a 12ft tinny with 15hp outboard, but the MAC gave us more security and range. We were actually equipped to do overnights in the MAC, but did not need to.
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Lyndon,
Sorry a senior moment......but I can't remember where I saw a post (very recently) that Kalumburu is/will be closed to the general public for the next 12 months.
Suggesting you make the appropriate enquiries before going too far with planning.
Cheers
