I am looking at travelling from
Timber Creek through to the Stuart Hwy via Top Springs in September. I am towing a 17 ft off road van behind a
Ranger twin cab. All should still be in good nick by then. I am not expecting to find the condition of the road just an idea what to expect terrain and traffic wise would be good. I can see there is a crossing of the
Victoria River so at least one
river crossing. Any clues would be helpful.

Did it in 1973 in a Holden ute, Allan, so the
Ranger & van will be okay. Good scenery through Jaspers
Gorge, then downs country past VRD & Top Springs, before getting into lancewood scrub down the Buchanan. Doubt if that route would be too busy, unless you struck lots of nomads, or half a dozen road trains?

Jasper Gorge. Back in 2005
Bucannan Highway, 2005.
Victoria River crossing, 2005.
2005, east of the rail I reckon.

The section from
Timber Creek to Top Springs is often rough and undulating but a very enjoyable and interesting Drive including Victoria
River Crossing etc.. the section from
Timber Creek out to the Stuart Highway a much better Road but not very interesting .tip ... maybe don't
camp around top springs . The buntine Highway that crosses at Top Springs is a major thoroughfare for road trains going in different directions

Went through in 2018 with a back folder camper behind 3.2l
Ranger. Road was rough in
places but slow with tyre pressures down no issues other than local station vehicles not caring much about their speed when passing
Sandy Creek NT
Camped at Charlies Crossing and east of VRD at Sandy’s Creek. Definitely would not
camp at Top Springs. Really enjoyed the
Timber Creek to Top Springs section more-so than out to the Stuart

Is there a particular reason to avoid Top Springs for an overnight stop or is that something that is perhaps not spoken about and I just take your advice.

1 one reason is for the truck park there with engine running for what seems like hours the second reason is we were warned the following morning by someone working in the pub that its lucky you're still got your wheels on your car....
lol :)))
P.s should note that was years ago , in later year have not stop there ..

Thanks for all of this. There certainly seems to be a pattern here. Such a shame we cannot enjoy the things we are entitled to. Allan C.
