I know the mouse plague has been going for a while now in many parts of NSW and elsewhere but I wondering how far west is affected. Do areas around
Nyngan or
Cobar have lots of the little
pests? Further west? Am possibly heading out that way during school holidays and curious about it.

We live 15km outside of Dubbo and the mice are everywhere,
Narromine and their surrounding towns are worse i'm told. We are using on average 400 grams of Ratsak around the outside of our property a day at the moment and its littered with dead mice. We are trapping 20 mice a night in our roof and 20 in our
pool on a daily basis and hundreds more dying from baiting thankfully. Its been going on for 3 or 4 months now and its stopping us from getting away for a trip. Let's hope it gets better soon. A bit more wet and cold weather should cut their breeding and numbers down. Michael

Then of course there's the side effect of baiting the mice that are then consumed by native birds, reptiles and mammals. No win situation.

That's an issue for sure, I made bait boxes so only mice can see the bait and access to them is small and we pick up what dead ones we can. Its never going to be perfect but we are managing the situation the best we can.
Trapping is best but its not practical for all situations. We have to keep the mice fed with Ratsak to keep them out of the house and stop them from eating our cars. Everything we move or open in our shed, mice run out.. It really is an awful situation. Ohh! And the smell... Michael

Michael,
I understand, there's no real alternative. I can't even imagine what it must be like going through it.

Mice, locusts, and armyworms, oh my!
But seriously, some people have a lot to deal with, hopefully things improve soon. In particular, the mouse plague videos I've seen are just crazy.

So what's the best way to keep mice away from the wiring under the car? I'll be camping out near
Nyngan on my way through in late May.

Get some of the Hovex Camphor balls from Coles/Woolies etc. Think it's 3 or 4 balls in a green plastic cage, you can hang a few of them around the engine bay.
Given the number of mice I've seen in the news reports you might need a LOT though LOL
