Im planning on doing the big lap at some point in the next year or so (after covid settles somewhat) and am after some advice. I really like the idea of a rooftop tent as opposed to a swag, however I'm not sure if the typical rooftop tent (kings etc) is compatible with a commodore wagon. I saw one on an old VZ wagon (mine's a VE) near work the other day and it got me thinking.

Im not sure if the body can handle having so much weight on the roof or not? Especially if there's me and the missus up top, I really dont know how much weight it can handle.

Should be okay, Pieman. Have seen quite a few rooftop tents on Hyundai Getz.

Yep I will agree with that. When we went to Tassy awhile ago, Judy and I saw lots of these little hire cars with roof top tents. Very practicle if you do not get too far off the beaten track

.
In past times, before the 4WD's, many people toured Oz in regular sedans such as the Commodore with a roof-rack loaded to the hilt.
A rooftop tent would not be much different. And there are some that are lighter than others.

Cheers for the replies fellas. I think it should probably be OK, although I'd wanna get some solid roof racks on first. Thanks (y)

go for it. most people travelled in sedans before we went for big 4x4's . you will be restricted at times where you can go but...
just check the legal load limits that you are allowed to carry around

G'day, the genuine roof racks have a load limit of 75kg, same as the after market ones. That would be a dynamic load, ie, when moving, so when stationary would be much greater, how much, have no idea, but if they fit them to Hyundai Getz, your VE should be fine.

Put a car on its roof and it doesn't crush to the window sills, so there is a fair bit of structural strength in the A,B, C and D pillars, more than enough for 250kg of tent and occupants.

It will make the car handle differently though as there is a fair bit of weight swaying around on the corners. The weight limits for roof racks are set so they don't upset the dynamic handling too much and that load bouncing along back roads isn't going to cause things to break.
Static loading the roof structure with your tent, you and the Mrs, kids and a dog and I couldn't see anything getting broken.

Hi Pieman,

You might want to check in your owners manual as to the weight loading of your roof & roof rack mounting points. This will ultimately determine if your roof can support the weight of the RTT with two occupants.

I saw a Subaru that had mildly rear ended another car a while back. It's roof tent snapped the rack brackets and ended up on the bonnet and seemed to do more damage than the collision. Check the loads and limits on the roof racks carefully.

Do your checks thoroughly as to what your vehicles roof can support there are some decent forces involved, it would be pretty dodgy thinking it's fine when someone says they saw one on a different type of vehicle alltogether and assumes it's ok to fit one to your roof.

Commodore wagon eh ? You may be surprised at the weight limits set by the factory , go over them and
'insurance' can become a mine field in the event of an accident , see a lot of RTTs that just by themselves without the racks etc are over the weight limit 'static' let alone dynamic ...
