How quick has the Falcon and Commodore disappeared from our roads!

Funny enough the latter models where probably the best each company produced.

Its amazing how dual cabs, and the small Suvs now dominate, If only this country could build something

of our own, with our own resources, and labour ..........I know i'm dreamin!, ....

Certainly is, the Axle has just been re greased and rotating well, some flings off though!

Axle,
Doesn't it follow that the latest models SHOULD be better than earlier ones? If not, those companies have a retrograde philosophy or business plan. Sort of goes without saying. Why would you advertise new models which are lesser? At least with the dual cabs they are much the same but their "towing capacity" increases and so is a cheap upgrade for sales. Just make 'em the same and claim more.

I'm just glad I still own one of the best utes that Australia ever designed and produced - and it has a full length chassis, and is rated to carry 1 tonne!

I'm talking about the WB Holden 1-tonner! A lot of Australia was well served by them in the '70's and 80's.

And they just keep going up in value, now that they're a collector item!

As for the Commodores, I wouldn't own one in a fit - cheapest throwaway vehicle that GMH and the subsequent organisation, the Holden Motor Company ever produced.

The end of the good ole' GMH came when they changed their name to the Holden Motor Company in 1986.

Then they tried to resurrect their glory days, by changing the name back to GM Holden in 2005 - just as they produced the very worst, of the even-cheaper line of Commodores. It was all downhill from there.

Interesting and comprehensive history of Holden in the link below. I'm glad I was around to experience buying the best of the Holdens, in the 1960's to the early 1980's.

My first new Holden was an EH 179 in 1964, the last new Holden I bought was a WB Kingswood ute in 1980.

Bought Toyota ever since the early 1980's and have never looked back, and have never had such reliable and robust vehicles.

Now, out with the popcorn and watch the entertainment .... [;-)

Cheers, Ron.

Hi Ron, I had the model before in a ute the HZ, it was also a good unit had a very solid feel on the road

Had they got rid of that gutless fuel guzzling 202 motor, things would have been even better!

Anyway its life ended when i got Tboned by a dodge truck, Shame really i would probably still have it

and would have been company for the old Landy lol.

Axle,
If you thought the 202 was gutless you must never have had the pleasure of driving a HQ Belmont fitted with the more economic 173. Dont know why they didnt just stick with the 179.

Yep , recon the best motor of the era was the 245 Hemi unless you wanted the Ford V8 for 'sound' ...

HI
GM treated Holden like a poor di**head cousin. There are thousands of examples where the USA GM economized the real product for Australia . ALL products were GM USA approved . Huge Downfall.
When the USA had 230 250 292 6 cylinders Ozzy received a 202 . Even Ford received 200-221 --250 .
The 202 and all red motors were at the economy end of the scale .

The aussie 4.9ltr V8 with engine developments did have many modern features even B4 the USA .

The HQ witha 173 was a waste of space . The only time a 202 shined in regards to power.
