Yes Bill take two lollies from the jar but Eucla not correct.
The spigot or base was rammed into the earth & the pole was then inserted in the spigot.
It was made that way to carry & also we were told the spigot was less susceptible to damage.
Too easy.

Anyone travelling the Landsborough Highway, between Kynuna & McKinlay, may have noticed a few remaining telegraph poles, similar to the Oppenheimer version that Peter mentions. They appear to be smaller in diameter, than Batsy's version, and are galvanised too.

There's a few examples, a few Kms east of Wild Duck Ck, about 30kms west of Kynuna.

I have just dug up a photo of the poles. They are marked as "Bullers Ltd. London" also have "Patented interchangeable pole" stamped on them.

From the Allied Insulators site - "This continued until 1959 when there was an agreement between Bullers Ltd and Taylor Tunnicliff to form Allied Insulators," - and - Bullers "were supplying porcelain Insulators complete with Ironwork in large quantities."

They are still going as part of Allied Insulators today. They made the poles under licence from Oppenheimer's.
