Going out for a drive in this environment and in your State

My good lady and myself quite often go for a drive on a weekend day, the day depends what else is going on that particular weekend. We usually travel out an hour or so, find a pub for lunch and return. We live in the Central West NSW so within a few kilometres we are at highway speeds and on our way, looking for somewhere new or a dirt road as an alternative route. So NSW and the Federal Govts are saying that we should all be staying home unless its essential. A few scenarios in the news the other day, going fishing, going for a drive, picking up your girlfriend and going for an isolated picnic, (check with your wife on that one), so the reply in the news article was a definite NO. Anyway we went out last Sunday after lunch for a few hours, returned, didn't leave the car so we don't see any issues here. The countryside is so green and beautiful at the moment so its hard to resist. I guess there is a possibility of a random breath test or similar where Police would have the opportunity to ask you where you are going and why. ( random breath tests have been suspended in some states due to the virus). What do you think? Michael

David to be fair, some of these rules have been unclear till very recently, some are state and some are Federal. Michael

But you knew the rules ! You even state that you shouldnt have gone and now your trying to defend the indefensible. Just stay at home and go for an occaisional walk. My 65 year old sister in pommy land has just been told (couple of days ago) that she cannot leave the house at all for 12 weeks...no street walks or anything....

Fair enough Michael. Looks like you just poked a couple of bears on the site. :)
Just went down to Woolies for some milk and got pulled into gear by a little lady for not standing on the cross. It's a strange world out there. Time for a red.

I,m just trying to figure out why you are the entitled one to needlessly head off on a non essential drive when we have been told relentlessly to stay at home for not only your own health but that of the communities. Sorry mate..I,m not impressed with this sort of behaviour. I,d say grow up, act responsibly and stay at bloody home...go for a walk around the block if you have too. I,ve been self isolating for 3 weeks now and comments like yours piss me off no end...

I could not have said it better myself, I have been in Isolation for about the same time. My wife is now working from home, which is a good thing, to go on a country drive, we would love to ,but we havew been told to stay at home , and that is what we shall do.

Here in the city in NSW you can go for a walk in the park, but you cannot sit down - even if solo.. You will be moved on.

Little old lady went for her morning constitutional, needed a rest so sat on a bench and a few minutes later was moved on.

You cannot go on a metropolitan beach for a walk, let alone sit on the sand.

But you can walk in the park and pass close by other walkers on the path. It's weird.

Is it the same in other states?

Frank, in W.A., the restrictions are not so severe. You can go to the beach, but no gatherings, no sunbaking, and social distancing in place.

No non-essential, "drives in the country", the message is STAY AT HOME.

W.A. now has regional border controls, broken up into Perth-Peel region, Mid-West, Wheatbelt, South-West, Great Southern, Goldfields-Esperance, Pilbara and Kimberley regions.

You cannot move between regions unless it is essential.

Police roadblocks are on virtually every road between regions, you need supporting documentation to guarantee transit between regions.

W.A. - Border closures and travel restrictions

Cheers, Ron.

To be fair, and put into a different perspective, if people are allowed to go fishing, surely a country drive without getting out anywhere is ok?
We all need to keep our mental health in check and avoid cabin fever in ways that is safe, which is why we go for a power walk each afternoon (not a trolling statement as we are allowed to). This action though puts us much closer to other people (joggers etc) than going on a country drive.

I've got no drama with those in a rural environment, going for a little drive, to get out of home for a while. The problem might arise if the "casual traveller" has to interact with another traveller, such as a traffic incident, medical drama or even a chat with a police officer.

I left town each day last week, for work, and there's very little traffic in western Qld, mainly other trucks, carting cattle. Haven't seen any roadblocks, except the ones on TV..

Its interesting that Bunning car park here is overflowing, the bread and coffee shops serving takeaway coffee are five deep with people. SuperCheap seem busy and life goes on it seems. Its really about minimising exposure to others. We are aware of it but other dont seem to be. Michael

I get where you are coming from Micheal and don’t understand how going for a drive and not leaving your vehicle is an issue and yet you can do a personal training session in the park with a trainer who might be doing that with several different people a day. .... doesn’t make sense does it but those are the rules
Not everyone is interested in doing exercise outside for a bit of mental stimulation, some just like to go for a scenic drive.

If we are going to be doing this long term it is going to be tough on the city folk and those living in apartments
Lucky for you living in a rural setting

Go for a drive and sooner or later you need fuel and the potential to spread the virus.
Same if you go to the shops for food, but one is "essential" and the other is not.

Yes Alby, I feel for the apartment dwellers, sharing lifts and confined spaces. I left Sydney a few years ago and dont regret it. People using trains and buses and still working in the majors cities are definitely at a greater risk than others who are in less populated areas. Cheers

You only need one infected person who has just come back from overseas, or just left a cruise ship, to travel into your area - and you might be thinking you're safe in an isolated area - but you aren't.

This is how, here in W.A., we have COVID-19 cases in the Wheatbelt and the Great Southern regions - both very low population rural areas, but still as vulnerable as people in the cities.

Cheers, Ron.

P_n_M what I find ridiculous is the going to the shops for food. We'd do it weekly EXCEPT they have quotas on essentials such as milk - 1x 2L per visit (our daily consumption) - which means we need to go DAILY to replenish. So our exposure (and that of other shoppers to us) goes up unnecessarily.

The best advice I have read is that you are most unlikely l to get the virus walking past somebody in the shopping centre.

Spend half an hour talking to someone who has it makes you vulnerable.

That said I am doing as advised and staying home as much as I can

Take care

Here in good old SA, there is not the same level of restrictions as yet.

I would think that if my wife and I go for a 200km drive to the country for a day trip, as we do sometimes, and stop at a bakery (which are still open for take away food here) for some food which we eat somewhere away from other people, then move on and get fuel at a servo somewhere (which are still open here) and then head on home, we should be fine as long as we keep our distance from others along the way.

We could call it going out for medical reasons anyway for mental health?

I know we might have an accident or break down somewhere but surely in the unlikely chance of that happening, it would not be difficult to practice social distancing?

And then if you have a prang, you line up behind the other patients outside the hospitals, that are full of COVID-19 victims?

Doesn't sound at all sensible to me. I would dread having any bodily damage happen to me, that means I would have to be attended to, by an already overloaded hospital and health system.

Even in regular circumstances, there is "ambulance ramping" in some city hospitals, with patients having to wait for admission. And this is not "regular circumstances".

All those places are open for people who NEED their services. The criteria for NEED is NOT fulfilled by going for a recreational drive.

If you do what your post suggests you might do, you're just doing your bit the spread the bloody thing.

Just do what we're all being told to do. Stay at home!

Fair go, David M, we're still dealing with the fallout from the Ruby Princess.

But he will get the rules clarified for him. Police have already issued fines for "out and about without good reason".

Because of the debacle with that damned ship and the Bondi Beach fiasco we're really playing catch-up here. Rules are pretty tight, though for some unknown reason, we and Vic haven't closed borders yet.

Michael you asked for opinions so I'd say your one of many who haven't gotten the message and probably won't. The more people that stay at home now might mean the sooner this will be over and the less restrictions we all have to comply with. I work out of town then come home for 4 to 5 days off only done one trip for groceries then stay around the house no unnessary travel on the cards like you and lots of others think they need to do. Keep up the good work all those who ignore advice from the authorities then hopefully we'll go into lock down stage sooner so you can pat yourself on the back and self deny or ignore the effect it may have on others.

Your home is the one on your MDL, your official address you use for contact by authorities, and by businesses.
"No fixed address" is not a good look, and one that regularly appears in the courts.

The authorities are currently concentrating on people who have "no fixed address", as they are "falling through the cracks", and are liable to be the weak point in stopping the spread of the virus.

Cheers, Ron.

Thanks everyone for the replies.. This morning i saw our Prime Minister on TV saying get out and support the businesses that are open, we need to keep as much of our economy running as possible, his words.... Up here we have Big W, Target, The Reject Shop all open, not much emergeny stuff in all of those.. All the Auto shops, four of them in total, Mitre 10 and Bunnings, the car park is overflowing. I'm guessing everyone at Bunnings is there buying that emergency tap washer... Takeaway food, coffee Shops for takeaway coffee and the hot bread shops are doing well i'm guessing. NSW Parks sent me an email today saying that Camping and Picnicking is not allowed, but all National parks are open, no Visitor centres are open but all roads and walking trails are open and please observe distancing rules when in the Parks at this time. These rules are in line with the NSW state Government the Email says... So if you cant drive to the National parks, the walking trails must be for the lucky people who live next door within walking distance to the Parks.
You will be happy to know i changed the engine and transmission oils and filters on my wife's Corolla this morning and spent the rest of the day on the mower, we got 80mm of rain in the last few days, the grass is growing like crazy. I guess that will keep me busy at home for a while.. Michael

Michael, I feel your pain. It is very difficult to make sense of all this.

If you accept the spirit of the instructions issued so far, and not just the spirit, the direct words from those in charge - ie stay at home, don't go out unless for essentials and keep that to a minimum - then how does any of what you posted make sense? It doesn't, yet everything you say is true.

I cannot pretend to resolve this, other than to say that everyone should use common sense. Yes, I know that's in short supply and cannot be legislated for but that's what it boils down to.

Community common sense and co-operation.

I think the PM was wrong in saying "get out ....etc." That's just what we're being told NOT to do.

Talk about unhelpful mixed messages.

Gday Frank, yes we have state, federal, and everyone who can find a spot on a news clip involved. We shop once a week and go home, I ordered some things online from Supercheap and they arrived at our gate to avoid contact with others. The problem is contact with others, going to get takeaway coffee and takeaway food is absurd and that adds more contact. Some of my detractors above would have far more contact with people than my wife and I, some have partners still working and some both are probably working, all that exposure to others but are very quick to criticize us for keeping to ourselves and going for a drive. But i did ask and they told me.. Common sense is the key, rules are not always correct nor right, they have been made up on the run. Regards Michael

Moreso the point!! - people are fleeing the crowded polluted city and invisibly taking the virus with them to isolated virus free communities.

As they say the virus has only I move - To get from one host to the other!!

Its Bizarre, Our Bunnings is overrun, I guess the old man is off work and he's renovating and doing those odd jobs he never finds time to do. I'm not going near the joint for the foreseeable future. Michael

I have been thinking about responding to this thred all night so now here goes;

In my life experience there are two types of people
1/ The UNTHINKING blind lemmings who follow "THE RULES" to the letter
2/The THINKING eyes open HUMAN BEINGS who follow the SPIRIT of the rules.
I suspect the OP is in the second category and l know that l am FIRMLY in the second category .
I cannot see anything wrong with going for a drive in the country, meeting no-one and not getting out of the car.
I know who will come out of this with more of a sane mind, it won't be the lemmings!

I don't know what State you live in Nick, but in W.A. there are only about 15 CLEAR, CONCISE REASONS, for going for a drive.

And with regional lockdowns in place, Police have roadblocks everywhere, to ensure that people are NOT just GOING FOR A DRIVE, without one of those specific reasons, being behind the NEED to travel.

And you need PAPERWORK and DOCUMENTATION to provide the specific reason for travelling between regions.

ABC News - the reasons that will get you through travel checkpoints

Cheers, Ron.

It's a bit like red lights when there's no traffic, isn't it?

The lemmings all stop and wait for the green.

I guess the thinking types analyse the traffic and drive through.

Frank, I've seen a court case where a bloke did just that, at 4:00AM at a deserted intersection.

He stopped on the line at the red, looked both ways, nothing coming, and drove off through the red light.

But a red light camera captured him and they sent him a fine in the mail, and he was that outraged, he went to court to defend his reasons for going through the red light.

He wasted his money and his breath, the magistrate "sympathised" with him - but the law was the law, and the fine stood.

It's the same with red arrows, that stay red for a few seconds, when the straight-ahead goes green.
You can turn when the red arrow goes off - but if you move off, and turn while the arrow is still red (even if there's nothing coming, and it goes off as you enter the intersection), it costs you $300 and 3 demerit points in W.A.

Cheers, Ron.

Thanks for the support Nick, i didn't get a lot of it. A lot of people are fairly primal and are happy to sit in front of their 75" TV watching re-runs of Rambo. I Like to be doing something constructive, i retired and bought a few acres to give me things to do and a little space. Everyone is different and nothing wrong with that, i hate being inside during the day if I don't need to be. Michael

Happy to support sane thinking people
People have got so vicious and nasty in this current enviroment. We are not far now from Nazi Germany with the current rules and regulations and where it was dob in your neighbor.
Common sense has gone out the window, not that it wasn't almost out the window before this all happened.

Thanks Nick, you would swear i was handing out used face masks from the Ruby Princess outside a 35 story apartment block in Green Square. You can get howled down by the very people who bend the rules to suit themselves. That's life on this mad planet at the moment. Michael

I get where you blokes are coming from as I am of similar mindset
The issue is that rules are made for those who can’t think for themselves and need to be lead and how are the authorities to know who is doing what so it is easier to just bag everyone up together to get the desired outcome which is fair enough too.

Anarchy: society without government or laws.

Prime example would be a comparison between well regimented Amateur Radio & the rabble(in most cities) of UHF CB.

I'm with you! Out here in "Fliesville", there's probably more rules bent than obeyed.

I would love to take my motorbike for a spin its good for over 400K before it needs fuel , its sitting in the garage with a full tank . My Y62 also is in the garage with a full tank , I cant see why I couldn't drive just a few K's to a couple of nice spots on a river I know close by to flick a few Trout flies . Both a ride or Fly Fishing would be good for the mental health . I haven't and wont do either .
But just on the news tonight a Mother took her 17 yo daughter for what was to be a short driving lesson , not stopping anywhere and a bloke sent his son to check on a tree at their holiday house that a neighbor rang to say was about to blow over and destroy the fence .
Both copped a $1645 fine , that's in Victoria

Hi there, the Police are over the top in Victoria , i did see the L driver, pretty crook really. The Police have told them to go straight home. Its no wonder people have no respect for them, and the Police are forever asking the public for help. Lets hope this Pandemic is over soon and we can all get back to normal. Thanks for the post. In case you haven’t caught up, the fine issued to the 17 year old learner driver has been withdrawn. However, the position regarding driving lessons has been clarified, they are not allowed, either by professional driving instructors or family members.

According to a quote from a NSW police spokesperson or someone else in authority (I can't remember) it is ok in NSW, whether a commercial driving instructor or someone else.
