If
the Spot X uses the Globalstar satellite like the Messenger does, you need to be aware that the service is subject to gaps.
From the Pivotel website:
Globalstar coverage
"The time the network is not available is experienced by the user as short gaps in service availability. During these service gaps an active call will drop and you will be unable to make or receive a call.These gaps are generally a few minutes in length - they may be longer the further north you are. Availability may be improved with the installation of a Globalstar car kit. "

Unless I am mistaken, that is the coverage for Globalstar's duplex
services, ie voice calls. Again, unless I am mistaken,
the Spot messaging service is simplex. Globalstar's simplex coverage is much more extensive.

I send a nightly OK msg with Spot when I'm out bush. A one in ten failure is about right for the southern part of the country.
Sometimes it can be put down to a block of the northern sky.
The take-out if it's critical is wait and preferably move for a repeat.
