Hi guys looking to upgrade from my rodeo to something with a bit better towing and more power in general. I'm tossing up between getting a newer rc colorado with a 4jj1 motor (best motor made????) or a gq patrol (turbo of course) or saving up a while longer and finding a 1hdt 80 series, my dad wants me to get something newer, but I'm just concerned with the electrics side of things, and I'm not sure saving up for a 1hdt 80 series is worth it as I will be looking a block of land soon so I'll need money for that. My boss despises patrols and says it's the biggest regret I'll have haha. If you have had one these cars please let me know what yoi think of them, will tow a trailer every now and then, go bush quite often and be on
the beach at least weekly.
Cheers, Kyle.

Why not a Pajero? We used them at work reliable, comfortable good on fuel and never seem to have problems..

If you were happy with the Rodeo why not look at another Isuzu be it D-Max or MU-X, both very reliable vehicles and great for towing, especially the auto.

Be a bit more specific if you can with what you have, just Rodeo means?. If it is a RA7 Rodeo, you already have a 4jj1 engine, same as 09 Dmax and RC Colorado. All the same vehicle. 80 series is ok but hard to find a lower km one now, especially with a 1HDT. A large engine patrol needs feeding more often and will use plenty of fuel. If you only tow a trailer sometimes but beach often, I would think lighter vehicle, not heavier. Most modern electrics are reliable, what aspect of electrics frighten you?

If you're buying a 2nd hand diesel, make sure you get something that does not have a diesel particulate filter (DPF), which all the new utes do these days.
The anti-pollution gear is a pain in the a..e. It destroys your fuel efficiency, makes your vehicle more at risk of going up in smoke if driving over grass or other vegetation, and is just another thing to go wrong.
If buying new, the longest warranty possible is a smart idea.
Good luck!!

Get yourself an RC Colorado, you can't go wrong there. But trying to find a good one for $14K will be difficult.
Try and get one with as low kms as possible, and one that has had an easy life.
If a used vehicle shows signs of much bush-bashing and modifications, you will be looking at early repairs.
The 4JJ1 will easily do 400,000kms without a great deal of repair being needed.
Cheers, Ron.

Hi Kyle
I have had Rodeo's on my
farm and since then Had a Colorado dual cab that I used for towing o/r campertrailers ,I now have a Trailblazer that I tow a MDC Xt15 HR o/r van and just completed a 8K round trip to the Gulf and return.
All 3 vehicles have been great and have never had any probs on all types of roads and tracks and pretty good on fuel considering where we have been.
Would recommend them to anyone.
good luck
Ed

You won't go wrong with an RC colorado/dmax. I had one for 6 years and couldn't fault it. A couple of things, the auto's are retarded power wise, the manuals aren't. The cab/chassis models came out with stronger
suspension and most importantly a longer wheel base which will help with loading and towing. I had the shorter wheelbase twin cab auto and it was fine.

The cab /chassis model only has slightly more leaves in the rear, same front torsion bars and the rear shocks are slightly different in ability. Not that you would notice as neither the front or rear OE shocks are any good anyway right from brand new.. If buying one of any age immediately replace ALL shocks to decent ones so it rides, controls and handles and brakes. I removed ALL my shocks at 5000km from new because they just didn't do what shock absorbers are designed or used on vehicles to do.
If the shocks don't work
well, it will not absorb and control in rough work and towing situations AND the ABS "Cannot work" if the shocks can't keep the tyres on the ground. My OE new shocks were appalling in performance, Bilsteins transformed all aspects of handling.

Yes the front ends were boaty from new. All ours got
suspension upgrades as a matter of course except the 2wd twin cab which rode like a limo - it had a coil front end rather than the torsion bar fronts the 4wd’s got. I forgot about the ‘noddy wagon’ feel of the standard ones.

I have had Nissan Patrols and they are an excellent vehicle in many ways. The 4.2 litre diesel is a very reliable motor. It does however lack power. I struggled to tow uphill and used about 15-16 ltrs/100km.
I now have a Amarok V6 Highline. It is an excellent vehicle towing. I average about 12ltrs/100 kms towing a 1.5t off-road camper trailer. I do not feel it behind me. I accelerate uphill. With an output 165/180kw and 550/580nm it has more power than I will ever need.

With $14K to spend as his limit, I think that cuts out a V6 Amarok.
Not everyone has $45K to $50K to spend on a used 4WD, as a used V6 Amarok runs into.
