From Live traffic NSW this morning:

"Motorists should divert via Hay & Wilcannia using Sturt Hwy, Cobb Hwy, & Barrier Hwy - this will add an extra nine hours to your journey.
Motorists choosing to travel via Sth Australia as an alternative should visit traffic.sa.gov.au for road conditions.
Local Council, Transport for NSW
Allow extra travel time.
Avoid the area; use diversions.
The bridge is closed until further notice"

Nine hour diversion on a major Highway !!

1/2 to 3/4 an hour in a 4x4 but we passed several cars on it. It's good road but has some narrow grids and a very narrow bridge. The bridge has a 4 ton limit and we were 3.75 combined. The lady at the Coombah roadhouse told us it was crap and she'd never use it but as I said it was quite good. Be aware that Ginko owns the bit of Haul road from the Silver City highway to the Old Broken Hill highway but there is public access allowed but the trucks have right of way.

UPDATE: EMERGENCY CLOSURE OF BUNNERUNGEE CREEK BRIDGE – SILVER CITY HIGHWAY

Motorists are advised of changed traffic conditions on Bunnerungee Creek Bridge, 65 kilometres north of Wentworth.
A structural defect has been identified following a routine bridge inspection, resulting in the closure of the bridge until further notice.

A specialist bridge team is investigating and assessing the damage while working on a solution. The community will be kept informed as information comes available.
Through road users will be detoured via Hay and Wilcania on the Sturt Hwy, Cobb highway, Barrier Hwy adding an additional 9 hours travel time to the journey.

The Silver City Highway is closed between Broken Hill and Wentworth to through traffic. Road closure points at Broken Hill and Wentworth on are being manned 24hrs by traffic control staff providing information to approaching motorists.
Local traffic is still able to access the Silver City Hwy either side of the Bunnerungee Bridge, with a second closure located at the bridge to prevent vehicle access.

Roads & Maritime Services are currently deploying Variable Message Boards at key intersections and critical decision points on the State Road network to provide motorists increased notice of the closure and associated detour route.

Motorists and agencies are advised that fuel and accommodation options are limited on this route and are to consider the need for continuing travel overnight.
Can you please distribute this notice accordingly to appropriate stakeholders and staff.

For the latest traffic updates download the Live Traffic NSW App, visit livetraffic.com or call 132 701.

Wentworth Shire Council Advice for motorists regarding the conditions of roads diverting around the closed area of the Anabranch on the Silver City Highway currently closed for emergency repairs to the bridge. There is currently no access from Broken Hill to Wentworth using the Silver City Highway.

This would appear to mean you can't use your Old Broken Hill Road diversion even if under 4 tonne, Ivan. Based on your report that seems to me to be unnecessarily limiting to light vehicles.

Maybe they think the narrow grids and bridge are too risky for the general public.

Mate, The bridge is a piece of shit and has had a load limit on it for years. We actually weighed our setup fully planning to cross the bridge on our way out early last week but used Roo Roo road instead. We camped on The Old Broken Hill Road just next to the bridge last Tuesday on our way out and last night on our way back in.
We were stopped by RMS leaving Broken Hill and when we told him the way we planned to go he had no issues they just wont suggest it. RMS will never allow a dirt road to be a diversion for main traffic is what we were told by the guys at the Wentworth end.
