Planning a trip from Vic. To W.A. next year and curious if anyone can tell me if Mulga Park Road permits are easily available.
Wanting to travel the GCR but have already been to Uluru & Katya Tjutya, so not needing to do the Erldunda to Yulara bit, but still wanting include Surveyor Generals Corner and on the map Mulga Park looks like an interesting way to get there.
Any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated.

G'day Murray,
Go to the Ngaanyatjarra website and apply online.
Back in March we got our permit back in 2 days. We listed the names from Amata to Warburton and included SGC rather than the varying road names. Enjoy a great drive.
Safe travels, Graham.

Ditto, we did the SGC in 2017, got permits back within a very short time.

Hi Graham

How did you get your permit to drive through the APY Land, which has nothing to do with the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in WA.

APY Lands is extremely hard to get permits to drive through, you must know someone there, supply a Police check and then $55 per person on top of that.

Cheers

Stephen

Now I pretty sure someone will come on saying they have been there but I was under the assumption Mulga park was a no go. That it was nigh on impossible to get permits for APY lands which Mulga Park is a partof. SGC is a different permit

If that is the case, then it’s no wonder that tax payers get upset about lack of access to pass through these areas. The Australian Government has just contributed $113 million dollars for road improvements through the APY Lands.

I'd love to visit the area but when you look at it, it's their land, they do what they want with it. Apart from tourism there is no real reason to drive the are. It is quicker to go up the Great Central.

Spot on Ivan

I enquired recently and explained that we wanted to pay our respects to an old aboriginal friend that is buried at Amata.

I went on to say that we still had a couple of friends there, but was given the third degree, basically saying that they do not want any tourists there.

Using the name Mulga Park Rd can be confusing. There is the Mulga Park Rd from the Stuart Why to Mulga Park which is in the NT and needs no permit.

Then there is the Giles to Mulga Park Highway. As Ivan and Stephen say, from Mulga Park to the WA border, you won't get a transit or visitor permit in the APY lands. Then in WA it is the Ngaanyatjarra Council. They are efficient and issue permits quickly.

Getting a permit in the APY lands is a time consuming, frustrating, process that takes months to even get responses, and has almost zero chance of success.

Pity, it's a beautiful place

Thank you everyone for your responses.
I was remiss, and didn’t explain myself fully. The part of Mulga Park Rd I was referring to was Stuart Hwy to SGC.
As per Stephen L’s reply it looks like I have “ Buckley or Nunn” chance of a permit, so, will drive around the bitumen.........boring, boring.......but rest of the trip won’t be so will have to live with that.
Again thank you everyone

Hi Murray,

Please take all the opinions here as a guide only.
Do yourself a favor and give the council a phone call.
You may be surprised what they say if you take the non-aggressive approach.
I organised a permit for someone else on the phone a couple of years ago and it was granted the same day.

It is a nice drive though, I did it 22 years ago now - better than "boring, boring".

Cheers
Alan
