Hey
Went 4wdriving yesterday. Every time we went hard steep up or down a
hill in low range i would start smelling burning oil and smoke coming from the transmission? Only when its really hot. Its an automatic mitsubishi triton. I just got the trans oil professionally replaced a few months ago too?
Although i did spill a bit of oil when changing my oil filter which is in a similar area. But i think it was coming from above it (transmission)

It shouldn't be a problem going down
hill, the automis hardly working then. Is it the oil leak you had previously spewing oil onto the exhaust. If there was smoke from the auto itself, then I think you wouldn't get far as it will soon fail if that is true. Having the oil professionally replaced means what exactly.
Don't you wash off spilled oil from engine and vehicle??? And have you washed of the previous oil being distributed all over the lower front.

Yeah theres definitely more than enough oil in there...and we went for a good 5 or 6 hours and it only started happening when we were going hard.
Srry i meant the trans oil was flushed and topped up by transmission mechanic a few months ago.
I tried to clean most the oil when u spilled it but doubt i got it all.
I kept an eye on the temperature it all seemed normal besides the oil smell and smoking around or below the transmission

You don't want "more than enough" trans fluid in the auto, just the correct amount. Perhaps it is overfull and the fluid is being expelled when facing steeply downhill . Perhaps a
check of level is in order.

I think your right...sounds like it. Cars sitting at
home now so ill
check it after work...wierd if they over filled it though seeing as it was a transmission specialist. Maybe its caused by the angle when going steep hills hey? Rather than just the engine getting hot

Not the transfer case draining back into the box? Haven’t heard of that in a few years. In low range the auto box does bugger all work.

If you own the vehicle then you can investigate where ANY oil leak is originating from. I doubt the oil is burning, that means flame, heated so it smokes is a bit different. Usually only the exhaust pipe is hot enough to do that, so some oil may be dripping into it. Did you fix the previous flood of leaks? Engine oil smell and trans oil have different smoke odours, so maybe a bit of heating some of both will clue you into what is happening.
When you say "driving hard" exactly what does that mean? Driving in difficult terrain or going fast as in driving it hard flat out?
When you give the initial clues, maybe try and include more observations, when, where, how often, etc, to enable, at least some targeted replies. When the story changes the original replies then become obsolete and the original comments are then often invalid or not focused on what the problem may be.

I tried to clean the entire engine bay surrounding the smoking area...there wasnt too much oil but looking a lot cleaner now.
Getting under the car i realized it couldnt have been coming from transmission but a bit more anterior towards the front...either from the engine itself or the diff directly under it...which did have a lot of oil and gunk on it. Just cleaned it off. The oil levels are all fine bow that i checked it when cold
Not sure if these pics would be any helpful but smoke was coming from up this location
