had bit of a prior but couldn't find exact answers
1st telstra satphone doesn't allow sat phones to make 13 number calls so when one needs to contact WA police on 13 44 44 -how does one get around this ?
Called 000 they weren't too interested in my situation or rather the stranded people I was trying to assist - petrol into diesel powered vehicle doesn't go very
well !
2nd received a letter from telstra saying they will be increasing their plans from $35 to $45 per month access due to increased costs from, their service provider -guess that means iridium ?
3rd - associated to #2 if i insert my sim card on a BYO plan $40 per month that in theory should work in satphone. -even telstra chat suggested it would to me
Know was bit of conjecture if they had or hadn't closed a loop hole allowing "normal sim cards" to be used on a older satphone not the newer 9555

Dean
The iridium will work with a post paid Telstra SIM card provided it is set for global
Roaming.
At least
mine did yesterday.
Call cost though require you to assign your super over to them as they are about
$3 per minute in and out but in an emergency who cares

I had another chat session with Telstra asking them about my normal phone plan.
Confirmed it had international roaming but oddly if I go overseas pay $10 A day for access to phone calls SMS so I find that rather misleading
Also said it allows 13 + 18 prefix numbers
So apart from size of SIM card
mine being smallest size satphone larger it should work.
Not sure if my regular allowance on.plan would cover sat access but time will tell

I tried my post-paid Telstra sim last week. It used to work. I can send SMS and make calls but unable to receive calls or SMS. Calls to the Iridium time out, don’t even go to MessageBank. Other people are having similar problems.

Hi Kevin,
Yesterday my Iridium 9555 was both making and receiving calls with my $10 a
Month prepaid Telstra sim.
I hope it continues as I am about to start a trip

And what is the cheapest Telstra post-paid plan if you are looking for one just to run the sat phone ?
For many years is was $10 a month, then it went to $20 and today I got a notice that it is going to $25.
For that there are free calls and free SMS in Australia. No data, which I have no need for.
That's the price of convenience I guess.

Yep got the same email, oh
well it's still cheap for what it is.
Have you ever sent sms from your sat when in the bush. Last year I made a few calls and received some and was charged accordingly. I sent and received quite a few sms, but no charge..I didn't follow up with Telstra. Heading off again in a couple of weeks and will be sending sms back and
forth, we'll see.

116hynes couldn't respond directly to your but have you checked where the SMS and message bank goes to ?
Telstra has a sub phone number that sms get forwarded to and from for a satphone to send receive sms
To
check SMS messaging number:
select ok or enter after each step
menu
messages
settings
service centre number
61 41870 6700
Similarly message bank would be 101 to access it
This is based on a "satphone number" not a mobile but may assist solving this issue

I just checked my plain vanilla post paid Telstra mobile SIM in my Motorola 9505A Iridium handset. It works fine for both incoming and outgoing calls. Did not try SMS.
Cheers
