We are looking into driving to Alice from
Newman via
Marble Bar and
Gary Junction Road. We are towing a 20ft off road caravan with a Ford
Ranger. We have travelled the Gunbarrel and Canning (vehicle only!) in the past, so are not totally inexperienced. However, we do not wish to get into strife with a van.
Has anyone traveled this track recently that can give updated info on the condition?

We did that route in the reverse direction (from Alice) this time last year, current model BT50s towing
Kimberley Karavans. It was fine then - just some rough patches. If you've done the Gunbarrel you know what to expect. Drive to conditions and you'll be ok.

Thanks for that Frank. Reassuring to know not too dramatic. Not as rough as Gunbarrel hopefully.

We have driven it a couple of times, the most recent in 2008 towing a boat.
It is an easy drive and a much, much better road than the Gunbarrel.
Good scenery, friendly communities and plenty of fuel.
You will not be alone with a caravan out there these days.

No sand dunes. :)
Sandiest bit I recall was a couple of km like this in 2008. Won't give you any grief.

We had a couple of laps on
Gary Junction in June, 2018.
Came up Gary Highway to
Gary Junction & overnighted at
Well 33, before fuelling up at Kunawaritji, and travelling west to Telfer
Mine, then down to Desert Queen Baths. Later in that month, we were heading east from
Marble Bar via Carrawine
Gorge &
Running Waters, camped at 33 again, refuelled again at the community, and travelled through to Sandy Blight
Junction where we headed south. Had dinner at Jupiter
Well, then camped near Mt Webb.
Road conditions varied from excellent past Jupiter
Well, soft sandy sections further East and rougher sections back near Telfer, all mixed in with occasional corrugated sections. We saw a number of vans through our journey on the road, & not all of them motoring sedately. It’s a top drive, with lots to see & emphasises how big WA is!
Was going to post a couple of photos but somewhere in the system is working union hours?

Thanks Bob. Yes know
well 33, spent 2 nights there three years ago when doing the Canning. Had a bit of trouble with a rear spring needed fixing which Albi at Kunawaritji fixed for us. That year we traveled down the Sandy Blight, onto the Abandoned section of the Gunbarrel, then the Gunbarrel and onto the Canning. We left the Canning half way to poke our noses into Karijini and then into Rudal on our way back to the Canning. Thought Rudal stunning, also walked up to top
pool at Desert Queen Baths which was a special day. The trip eventually ended with 10 days on Fraser Island.

Kunawaritji would be the most expensive fuel of any of the communities on the GJR.

We travelled this way only in the past couple of weeks and the road was in pretty good nick. There was a
grader doing a bit of work along the western end and while the road wasn’t busy, we saw a couple of caravans heading west while we were heading east. There’s also a couple of sandy sections but nothing too serious.

That’s great to hear ATG. That is up to date enough for me, consider it locked in!

Drove from the Alice end as far as Sandy Blight
Junction Rd last Tuesday and it was heavily corrugated. Very glad we weren't towing. Very little traffic.
cheers
