I’m traveling from Alice Springs to Docker River and beyond through Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
Not visiting Uluru or the Kata Tjuta sights.
Do I still need to pay the entry fee to the National Park?

It used to be that you showed your permit to the parks officer and they let you through

Looking for adventure.
In whatever comes our way.

Hi Bend

The short answer, is NO

Providing you have been given your transit permit from the CLC and have it printed, with all correct details, it is a matter of pulling up to the booth, hand over your permit through the window, and depending on the officer, you will be waved through.

We have done this on four occasions and only once, given the third degree about you must not stop until you are out of the park, you are not allowed to visit Ayers Rock, etc

As I said, you must have your permit printed out to show then at the booth.

Cheers

Hi Bend27,

I can confirm what Stephen has said, we did the same in 2016, showed our permit & was waved through.

Concur with all above,
and highlighting that they are a bit anal about the TRANSIT part.
As example we camped outside the night before, with plans to visit the rock the next day (climbing it in those days), exit to camp one more night, before leaving the next day heading to Gunbarrel.
At the gate they looked at the car and content and noticed the lack of gear (as we already set up camp) and basically told us that it does not look to them that we are transitting, it looks like we are visiting for the day.

We travelled that route in 2013 and again last year, and on both occasions I had my permits on the iPad rather than printed out, they were happy with that, taking note of the permit number. Both times we were cautioned about not stopping in the park as it was not allowed without payment, and we would be fined if caught.

We did stop at the start of the gravel section, to let down our tyres, and even felt uneasy about stopping for this purpose!

In Sept last year the young lass at the entry station did not even look at our permit and just waved us through when I said we had a transit pass. Just west of the park exit at the Olgas is a well used freecamp on the right. Nice views back to the domes. In one days travel from there to just past Docker there were two 4WD with punctures and another with a rear screen shattered. Take it easy..... W
