My brother and me will travel the Gary Highway in June 2019. We travel from
Alice Springs to
Kunawarritji, then down the Gary Highway to
Everard Junction, then follow the last bit of the
Gunbarrel Highway until we hit the
Great Central Road. I'm looking for any information regards Gary Highway. How are the road conditions? Best spots to
camp? Anything you are willing to share will be greatly appreciated. We have a lifted IZUZU MUX, good tyres, bulbar and side rails. I have done the Kidson Track (Nyangumarta Highway )a few times, first time 2012 when it was completely overgrown in a fully kitted HILUX. I expect the Gary Highway to be similar, also overgrown and washed out but if someone has any more detailed information it would be greatly appreciated!

Top section isn't to bad the bottom section is fairly tough with a fair bit of erosion and the track is mostly overgrown.

We did it in a Dmax towing a trailer. Totally doable but the trees and bushs are close to the track edge but apart from that and the erosion and spinafex it's not to bad

Thank you Ivan. Sounds like I will have a few scratches on my new paint by the sounds of it. Can you recall where the worst of erosions are? Would you share any good campsites? Have you been to Veevers crater?

"...but apart from that and the erosion and spinafex it's not to bad"
Is this one of those tracks where vehicle fire is a risk? Due to the grass or other vegetation building up underneath.

For what it's worth, my advice regarding spinifex is to take a long piece of wire bent to hook at one end & an 8 litre garden sprayer.

We regularly checked but the only problem we had was Spinafex rapt around the centre bearing on the tailshaft. Would blacken it but that was all.

That's all it takes, just the next step from black!

On the Gary last June, the
Ranger & Prado both had issues with spinifex caught underneath, and necessitating removal of some guards to completely clean it out. Near
Windy Corner.
Both Landcruisers, a 105 & a 79, rarely had enough to worry about, but were still checked at any stop.

Thanks, Bob.
From what I've read in these two threads, the Gary Highway may be a bit more "sketchy" than I want to deal with.
Now I'm wondering about the stretch of the
Gary Junction Road, between
Kiwirrkurra and Jupiter
Well?

I think some of washouts mentioned above were on the northern side of the
Young Range, not far north of
Everard Junction. Also some further north, and on the track into Veever’s Crater.
