Depends what you want to do.
If you intend to travel on most or basically any part of the OTT then you will need an off road hitch.
if you are sticking to the Development Road , no problem with a normal ball hitch.

The boys from All4Adventure tow their boat everywhere with a standard 50mm ball coupling.

I once rolled an off road trailer on the GRR.
I am sure that if it had been fitted with a ball the motorhome would have rolled too, so I would not recommend a ball for any road.

Wasn't that roll over because the suspension failed on the LHS of the trailer?

No.
We were travelling at 100kph and the LH wheel of the trailer hit a rock that was about 350mm diameter on the side of the road. The trailer spun clockwise in the air for 240 degrees, hit the ground smashing the tinny, bounced and then rolled back to where it stopped.
It broke the rear eye off the LH spring which then punched a hole in the bottom of the trailer, destroyed the tyre, broke the U bolts and badly bent the rim.

We left the tinny at the Ellenbrae dump (where we also made repairs to the trailer). They dragged into the house garden and planted flowers in it, then someone patched it up and they now use it as a ferry across the river in the wet between the house and the air strip, so it lives on :)
Cheers,
Peter

Given the results, better the trailer wheel hit the rock than a MH wheel.

Just luck it happened the way it did. Could have been much worse, but I reckon the fully articulating Tregg saved the day.
CORRECTION: the trailer spun clockwise for about 135 degrees (45 degrees short of up side down) then back 225 degrees after it hit the ground.
The F350 took a couple of violent L-R-L swings, but stayed on all 4 wheels.
Cheers,
Peter

Yep. We got off very lightly under the circumstances.

There is an Oz Hitch on gumtree for $20 at present.
They are a fantastic off road hitch.
At that price, do it anyway.

I would not use a std ball, if you articulate more than 30 degrees you run out of travel and side load the ball and hitch. My driveway is pretty steep off the road, and i used to stretch towballs with a std trailer on the back. This can lead to the hitch itself snapping, so go the offroad hitch.
