Hello Everyone. I have almost finished installing a Diesel Heater. I checked some u tube DIY sites and noticed that some people install the pump inside the vehicle.
Mine is attached outside to the chasses . Any thoughts on which is best? Also I am thinking of installing some kind of plate to,protect the pump and wires etc from flying stone damage. Any advice on installation would be appreciated thanks johno

If the unit is mounted where it can be hit with stones then I would be placing a guard over it and protecting the wiring.
The pumps make a ticking noise, if mounted to a metal panel it will amplify the noise, rubberised mountings will lessen the noise, as will having 300mm of un supported rubber fuel line connecting each end of the pump.
I would not mount inside the vehicle unless you have a way of muffling the noise.

Johno,
I have a Diesel heater in my van and the pump is outside, bolted to the chassis. It is at the rear of the van, close to where the diesel tank and is tucked up out of the way of flying stones etc.
The only time I hear it is when I am in the en-suite section in the dead of night.
It took me about three weeks to seek out where this faint ticking was coming from and what was making the noise.
My thoughts are, I will put up with a little noise to have the inside of the van at a pleasant 26c, when it is a not so pleasant -1c outside.
Cheers

Hi Johno,
I have not long finished the install of my diesel heater. Due to a number of factors, the unit is installed under the bed at the front of the van. The pump is attached underneath the van, to the back of the first cross member at the front of the van, if that makes sense. It is therefore fully protected from stones etc. If
mine was exposed to
debris, I would have fitted some form of protection, but I have found it to be just fine.
The ticking noise from the pump is hardly noticeable - and I mean I have to get within about 1 metre of it outside the van to hear the faintest noise. This is one of the main reasons I went with this brand - Webasto - nowhere near the cheapest, but it was the quietest I have come across. There is zero noise from the pump inside the van, even on the quietest of nights. Having a constant ticking noise from the fuel pump installed inside the van, no matter how slight, would drive me to distraction. Some pumps I have heard are really loud and irritating IMHO.
I have simply protected the fuel line and all cabling, both interior and exterior with split corrugated tubing.
Cheers,
Dave

I fitted a wabasto and have no ticking problems. I used the supplied rubber mount screwed to a piece of ally angle which I then screwed under the floor. Try not to mount the pump direct to metal and also if its mounted under the cupboards or seats helps. Cant hear it from inside ever.
