I went down from The Lynd last year at the end of July. Mostly dirt and because it was wet then there was lots of mud. Did I mention mud? If wet but open, you may enjoy the slipping and sliding. If dry weather quite nice. Nice both wet and dry but the choice is yours.
I was towing a Tvan at the time.

I have been researching this too and found this from the
Flinders Discovery Centre
"Kennedy Development Road - The road to
Porcupine Gorge National Park is sealed. The Kennedy Development Road has approximatly just over 50% sealed, spilt into sections."

Now that we have family permanently in
Cairns, we have travelled the route through the Lynd regularly over the past couple of years.
In 2015 there was about 100kms of gravel, split into about 6-8 sections(we don't remember exactly!). Since then there has been another 5kms of bitumen added to this. Think it was last year "they" promised a substantial amount to further bitumenise quite a bit of the remaining 95kms of gravel. Not sure if this promise has come to fruition yet?
It's an interesting drive, though quite remote in
places. The Lynd is a bit of a gem. Cheap diesel, smallest bar in Australia and good accomodation. And phone service! We like that road because it's only 10 hours to
Cairns from
home.
See numerous caravans on it too, just taking their time.

I live about 80 km south of
Hughenden, and travel to
Cairns regularly on the Hann Highway (
Hughenden to The Lynd.
Yes the road still has about 100km of gravel, but it is a good road in the dry. A bit muddy in the wet, but no real problem. Take it easy and you will be OK.
