Stayed in
Port Augusta way back in 1983. We remember the trains shunting all night and if possible want the quietest Caravan Park there in June. Please advise.

Suggest
Quorn or Mt Remarkable NP south of PA as quiet
places to stay.

If you think the railway shunting is noisy then there are no quiet parks in
Port Augusta. If you want a quiet park then I suggest
Spear Creek Caravan Park

My suggestion is
Port Lincoln,,,,,,,,,, no seriously,,, your question clearly states "in Port Augusta".
The last one on the right just before you turn onto the Stuart Hwy. I sleep like a log there. I thought I could remember the name when I started writing this but it has slipped through. I will post a follow up with the details.

Yep second the big 4. Have stayed here several times myself. No shunting but traffic noise will travel on those still outback nights.
Cheers

The traffic noise at the Bit4 outranks the shunting noise at Shoreline.

We have stayed at the Shoreline Caravan Park a couple of times, it seemed quiet enough.
Another alternative is Nutbush Retreat about 40kms west on the Eyre Highway, it is on a working sheep station.

Agree about Shoreline.
Another alternative is Knobbies at
Iron Knob, donation to stay there.

I will second that. Nutbush is excellent and
Iron Knob needs a little help from travellers spending a little money in the town.

Heading North not West. Should have said that first.

We stayed at Shoreline last September. No problem with shunting noise. The amount of shunting has probably been reduced due to the closure of the
Leigh Creek coal line.

Which way are you travelling? Out of town 40 kilometres to the west there is Nuttbush Retreat. Still fairly close to the highway, but it gets good reports.

Those still winter nights by the Stuart. You know you're parked a kilometer off the highway but it still sounds like that damn truck is about to drive right through your
camp!
Heaven help you if you've inadvertently parked near a stock ramp.
Cant wait for July :-)
Safe travels MH.

Hi Mick. We were somewhat amused to see the highway rest areas, right alongside the the highway, packed out be about 3 pm closer that in a sardine can caravan park. Our first night north of Alice was in earshot of the highway, but not noisy, the rest were further away. We live out of earshot of neighbours, so want a quiet night when on holidays.
Which remote area will you travel this year?

Make sure you don't
camp near a cattle
grid, like we did one night!
We also couldn't believe how they cram the rest areas, in some I reckon they would have trouble opening their van doors, wouldn't consider staying in one, if you look hard enough there is always a nice little out of the way spot.

I know what you mean about those rattling grids Shaker. Once we had a tow hitch break on the Stuart Highway about half way between The
Woomera turnoff and Glendambo. By the time I got back with it repaired it was dark and towing at night is something we don't do, so we pulled off the road for the night as soon as we could turn off it. It was near enough to a
grid to hear the rattle rattle all night as the trucks went over it.

Try the BIG 4. We usually stay there, 3 times now, and get our big
shop done for fruit and veg before heading north.
Good camp kitchen or get pizza delivered. We have never had a noise problem.
Good travelling.
