Article Comment: Pink Lakes

Baz, we just had a weekend up near there, just checking out Big Desert State Forest tracks, just south of the Mallee Hwy.
We were lucky, had perfect 26 and 28 c days and nice cool nights.
It can get uncomfortably warm to very hot in there, just luck of the draw really as to what the weather is doing when you drive through.

There're a lot of tracks in MSNP, extending right up past to the Sturt Hwy, nothing too difficult or sand too soft.

The Border Track is interesting in places coming down from the river up near Murtho and down the western boundary of the MSNP, and there's a myriad of tracks all through, ex pastoral land most of it.

Pink Lakes are interesting, and picturesque in the lower light of early morning / evening.
I can't recall if the camping near there is decent, or if any established camping around there, we came through later one afternoon about 4pm and kept moving on.
If it's hot you won't likely see anyone, even if reasonable there aren't many in the park usually, though if only doing Pink Lakes you aren't too far away from the blacktop.

Are you heading towards KI or to KI ?

As what Les said regarding terrain and tracks - not too difficult.

How long were you planning on staying in the area? Pink Lakes has a small camping area on the south side of the salt lake with a drop toilet. Take the road in from Underbool via Ouyen and you can't miss it. If you're interested in doing some tracks, a day trip to Mt Crozier and surrounds then back to Pink Lakes is good fun. If you have more time you could look at taking Pheny's Track (keep heading north past Mt Crozier) and then head westward towards the Border Track down to Pinaroo (about 2 days). There's a nice little camping area about 2/3 the way along Pheny's track with a drop toilet to break the trip up.
