Hi Everyone,

Hoping to gather some knowledge of campsites between Finke and Oodnadatta.
I am planning to start off from Chambers Pillar and follow the Old South Road / Ghan Rail Line Track into Finke. Our next destination is Oodnadatta. To break the trip up I would like to camp somewhere around Finke. I do not seem to find much info on recognised camp sites around here, I am thinking I may have to detour to Mount Dare and camp o/night. Any other ideas or recommendations, we are only looking for a basic campsite, we are self contained and don't really need facilities.

Thanks in Advance,
Mark

Mt Dare is OK but Dalhousie Springs for a dip in the hot thermal pools excelent. If not, there are 500 places you can pull of the track and camp in the scrub.

Thanks Steve,
I had thought about Dalhousie Springs, do you think it would be a comfortable days drive from Chambers Pillar, still allowing time for sight seeing ?
Have heard the Old Gahn track can be pretty slow going.

No I think 2 comfortable days would be better, the old ghan line can be rough.

I too would say make it 2 days.
I have never yet managed Dalhousie Springs to Chambers Pillar in one day ( tag along tours ).
On your own and if you leave early you may make it ok, but why rush?

Enjoy,
Mike

It was about 3 years since we were there and they realy looked after us when caught for 4 days because of roads closed.

All the best

Hi Eric
I was there in 2000 and cannot remember their names, sorry.
Were there with 70 vehicles and had a good night in the little bar with many others.

Hi Mark

I was up there last year and spent a night bush camping at the Lambert Centre (no facilities) about 30 km out of Finke. It is the geographical centre of Oz.
Old Andado Station also has a camping area, and if it is still going, toilets and showers. That is only about 100 km north of Mt Dare.

Mark, I agree that it is a two day trip to Chambers Pillar from Dalhousie. We camped alongside one of the old Fettlers cottages alongside the track.
