Hi guys I bought a nm diesel pajero 6 weeks ago that was looked after and drove fine it towed a caravan on trips, after about 2 weeks of getting to know the pajero I felt it go down gears on a down hill slope as I backed off it felt like it went from 5th to 3rd missing 4th. It did it again a day or 2 later and I went to manual shift to see if I was right about missing 4th and when I looked it was in 3rd. I Took it to auto transmission service centre they found some shavings in the box and said buy a new box, all transmissions get shavings I thought and the pajero doesn't hesitate going into gear , no shudder and changes smoothly , so I to it to another auto trans specialist they drove every where up down hills different speeds and their reply gearbox seems good its smooth doesn't hesitate etc ,that was on Thursday on Saturday went for a drive again down hill foot off the pedal it kicked down 5th to 3rd it over revs when you go to excelarate , it can also hold a long time in 3rd going up hills. I have read the ecu gets to know peoples driving and was wondering if the pajero needs a new ecu or to be reset no dash lights come on, or is it torque convertor anyone else had this?

It's fairly simple to reset the computer. Disconnect the earth terminal on the battery battery for a few minutes, some say 30 minutes to makes sure residual power is dissipated. Then re connect. This will reset the ecu and it will re learn your habits. Might work!

Do not tow in 5th auto...Most people are using 4th in the sports mode. The auto box will run a lot cooler and stay locked in longer.

Get on the Pajero forum Vic...It has all the answers.

Seeing you have no errors, is there a possibility that the trans is just kicking down to 4th and unlocking, so that you may think it is going into third.

It is quite common for transmissions to kick down and at the same time unlock , which can give the impression of changing down 2 gears.

You can check by easing off and seeing if the revs drop much more than the cruising speed.

We had an NM and for the 280,000klms we had, it did as you are explaining. Never had any problems. Towed the van most of the Klkms. Only ever towed in 4th gear which locked the transmission at just over 90kph, (91 or 92)

The nm and np pajeros (maybe later models?) will change down gears on descents to provide engine braking. Should be in the owners manual somewhere. My np does the same thing.

Another interesting feature is if you manually select 2nd gear while facing uphill, the gearbox will stop the vehicle rolling backwards when you release the footbrake.

Get a third opinion - from a Mitsubishi workshop.

They will look further than the gear box. The problem may be elsewhere as others have suggested.
