I looked into it before and your info is sorta right. The flywheel setup is different which is why the aussie box wont mate up properly. I was told that if you get the whole setup (bell housing, flywheel, clutch) then it is not a problem.
The second hurdle is that it has a computer to drive the sucker where your 3L does not. You can convert the pump to run manually but it will not make quite as much power as it does with the computer compensated advance and fuel. I was informed that converting it to full electronic was possible but not as easy as you would think and all these things cost money so I guess you should really do some homework before parting with hard earned cash. Someone else may have more helpful info for you good luck.

The 3L / 5L powered hilux use the W series gearboxes.
The 1KZ-TE uses the R series gearboxes. They are different (and stronger).
Early 1KZ-TE engines had limited electronics, but the current ones have a few more electronic bits. Be aware that there are atleast 3 different computers used with the 1KZ-TE engine (depending on the region & the vehicle it was fitted).
Not all regions got the intercooler (Norway / Poland / Finland etc cold region countries & Africa).
Of course there was the 1KZ-T engine (no electronics), if you can find one.
Cheapest would be to turbo the existing 3L engine (assuming its still servicable).

Thanks for your reply Prado95\ have considered all the feed back to date seems like a big job to change motors . To date have sent my 2.8litre 3l block to the local engine specilists to asess rebore o . I like a challenge but time and perhaps fear of unknown makes me think i should just re build . a n importer from SA said he can sell me a second hand turbo plus extras imported of a 2.4 motor for $ 750.
Sounds ok to me but i feel i will rebuild the 2.8 first
a 3 litre turbo as in the new hiluixes would ber good but no worries
