Hi All, we are starting to plan our trip leaving from
Jimboomba QLD up to
Winton, then the Gulf Country, across to the Cape and back down again. We are thinking around 6 weeks. There are two things we are looking for
feedback and or guidance around, and they are what is a reasonable daily budget for a trip like this (including that "o- bleep " moment) and what is the best time of year.
Any response at all will be graciously received.

Depends on what side trips and how many K's you go.
We did 51,000km and it cost a bit over $1 a K for everything including $3300 of flying to Horizontal Falls and Bungles and a chopper at Apostles.
However we stayed in a van park every night

Chris
We mainly tour and over the last couple or so years it has cost around $1000 a week for all expenses. We are usually away for 4 weeks and cover anywhere between 8 to10000 km with a fair amount of remote travel in that time. We do
free camp a lot and use NP's, but there are a lot of $20 van parks around. Fuel will be your biggest costing and that depends on where you go, just payed $2-20 lt on the cape, but payed $2-50 at
Gregory Downs 7 years ago and still can't figure that out.
Time wise go in the dry season june to oct and suggest not school holidays, but thats just my preference. Do lots of research as there's lots to do and see where you intend to go.

Hi Chris and Wendy
Expenses vary greatly for all of us, according to our means and our normal living styles. I recently penned a question and answer on how to calculate your costs of travel, and can share privately. I can be reached through my profile or through some of My
Blogs.

I have a spreadsheet to calculate this - includes kms + 30% increase factor for side trips; fuel cost input (say average of $1.40 diesel) and usage of 14l/100k.
Happy to provide a copy to anyone who wants a copy - PM me.

G'day Chris n Wendy
2x the $1000 a week.. Just the wife and I, driving a manual diesel 150 prado, towing a
camp trailer..
We could do it cheaper if we tried, but on an average, and not skimping to much.. 8 weeks, 10600km,
Worked out at $8000... Mixture of van parks, Nat parks,
free camping, and couple nights in motels..
Had a ball! Can't wait for next trip!.. Happy planning, and happy n safe travels to you. Cheers Odog

Thanks for all the great advice received, it seems that a reasonable budget is $1000 per week then a little extra if you want to do the "magic" stuff like helicopter flights or fishing charters to the reef. As a side note to the members who have replied, I am looking at paying the
membership fee to join the site, how do you guys find the extras of full
membership?
