Another good one, keep them coming. It was good to see that you used both cottages and B&Bs as I think both enrich the experience.
Some people would wonder why such interest in 'crumbling
ruins' but, just as here in Australia, being on
the spot and reading the story brings it alive. And as you have noted the
views make the climbs worthwhile.

Yes the crumbling
ruins had us
well and truly hooked - after all they and the people who built and lived in them shaped our history, language, laws ... the list goes on. And then there is much to wonder at in terms of the effort, ingenuity and investment required to build them all, especially the really ancient forts when
tools were very basic.
