Been towing small jayco with magna. Did a 5000km trip and picked up new galaxy and towed it
home.[Can anyone beat that?]. The magna is on its limit with 1500kgs. Been going to auctions and AU3 falcon wagons with leafspring rear end are going for about $17000. I thought I could carry small genny, fridge and dunny in the back of the wagon with helper springs. Using hayman reece hitch. Any comments? Please no comments on how good the 4x4 is as the bikkie bin is low and that amount of money won't buy you one. ()c

What to tow with?
Well a 3.5l v6 does the job for me (in a 1999 Pajero that don't go off road) (don't tell any one).
My 1985 Viscount Grand tourer comes in at 1500kg with 150 on ball. The 3.5l V6 hardly notices its there at all. You will need to
check specs on Falcon to ensure it can tow 1500kg and cope with 150kg on the ball. Out side those specs your not legal and thus insurers can stick it up you big time at claim time. Its a good idea to have plenty of power to spare, much less frustrating when doing 35kph up that
hill.
I nearly put a AU on the list myself but decided for a more versatile SUV. Looked cooler too!!

An ef or later auto falcon wagon can tow 2300kg legally with the usual 10% ball weight and braked trailer...we have the ef and are happy with it ..we tow a 17ft tandem axle poptop .

Whatever you buy Denis and if it is automatic makes sure that the car has an oil cooler. We have a Commodore wagon and it does not have an oil cooler and it does not like towing a trailer on warm to hot days. A friend has an AU Ford and normally it has very good fuel consuption but as soon as a trailer is connected the fuel consumption doubles. The Commodore does not seem to be adversely effected that way. Commodore gives its best fuel consumption of 10/100 at 120kmh(which unfortunately is over the speed limit). Around town it is a dog on fuel!
Good luck

Don`t buy a AU that is LPG dedicated. -- ie no petrol tank at all. Motor has a green cylinder head / rocker cover. The Taxi industry have experienced occasional motors using oil at the 160,000 km mark to the extent of having to replace the motor. If you are looking at a straight petrol motor -- no problems -- only the gas ones may be potential oil users.
