I've been driving my manual TD 100 series Cruiser for about 8,000 kms now. It'd done 50,000 kms when I bought it. Prior to this I had 1989 Maverick tray top (stil have it in fact) and before that a 1983 Nissan Patrol. My Cruiser seems to have the "thumpiest" gearbox of any vehicle I've ever driven. It seems that unless you are ever so precise with the dipping of the clutch, then the gearshift movement and then upping the clutch pedal, there's always a slight thump from the transmission. If you're gentle, it doesn't thump but if you so much as go anywhere a lazy change, then "THUMP". Is this a common fault with Cruisers manual trans??
Quite frankly, I'm a tad dissappointed with Cruisers. The old Maveriack and the Patrol before it, may have been noisy but they were bulletproof and still going - 220K kms on the Mav and about 400k kms on the SD33 Patrol and niether of 'em cost me a cent in major repairs ( except for a jammed brake pad that wore the disc rotor out). I'm starting to wonder about the rumbles and thumps this thing makes. Apparently, I've got warped disc rotors at 50k Kms ( Cruisers don't like puddles it seems) and now thumps in the trans. What with all this and the stories I read on this
forum about blown front diffs and $2,000.00 ignition keys, I'm really starting to wonder if a Landcruiser was a good idea after years of faithful "unburstable" service from my Nissans in rough bush environments.
Love this
forum - polite and knowledgeable, thanks guys

Thommo, re "ignition keys". Have a look at previous
forum messages - it can happen in extreme circumstances.

Bilbo,
Have only driven one 100 TD tojo, and didn't notice the gearchange, in that short drive. Have 79 series TD ute for work, and it has a really heavy clutch and gearbox, compared to n/a 79. The gearbox is quite notchy, and slow changes are the order of the day. Don't know if the 100 has the same g'box?
Not sure what you mean by "thumping"? Our 80 series will thump, when change is bad, or as you say, "lazy".
Having all those "horses" up the front would compensate, for a g'box filled with custard, and stirred with a wooden spoon!
Hooroo...

Ya know, years ago, when I first bought my old Mav, I drove seven s/h Landcruiser utes before buying that Maverick - and it was the Tojo gearchange/ box that put me off Tojo's at the time. Nothing's changed, I see.

Thommo. I don't recall saying it's dog. I did a lot of reading and choosing between a Patrol and the Toyota. I chose the Toyota for the power and torque for towing a van. I found about the warping of disc rotors, lumpy gear changes and expensive electronic keys after I'd bought it. Now as you can imagine a TD 100 series isn't cheap and it was a bit surprising to see that warped disc rotors after 50K kms because it went through water when the the brakes were hot and to read about people blowing front diffs when towing people out in reverse are common problems.
Well it makes me suspect that, with the exception of it's power, torque and superior ride the Toyota isn't all it's cracked up to be. However, at the moment, that's all it is - a suspicion. If it turns out to be a dog, I'll be sure to let you know. Thank you for your comments.

Oh, forgot to mention - the quote of $2,000.00 came not from this
forum but from a work colleague who runs a new V8 petrol Cruiser. That was the quote he was given to replace his keys. My apologies if I seem to have misquoted this
forum.

No worries. You could be right about the $2000 repair for the gxl up models mines only a standard and in them you only have to replace part of the ecu,In the better models you have to replace the hole engine management system.

The thumping isnt because its a contant 4wd and your use to a part timer.Ive got a part timer 100 series and a mates got a constant 80 series and ive noticed this sought off thing in his but not in
mine.(unless the missus is driving )
