Does anyone know if there are available, roll up awnings that stay permanently on the roof while driving, that will attach to one roof rail only, rather than having to be connected to a Rhino roof rack that crosses the roof and creates wind resistance, and costs extra to buy?

Not sure if they make them but one thing to keep in mind, I have a fox wing awning and it is quite heavy, I personally wouldn't mount it on one rail as I wouldn't be comfortable with the weight and the leverage it would apply. A lighter unit you might get away with.

Agreed you need a good solid mount, my ARB one broke off internal rivets that hold it to the backing plate and needed to be tied on with rope my last trip. I have since drilled the rivets and used nuts and bolts instead.
My advice is to replace the end rivets with nuts and bolts.
