Does anyone know whether you can
camp overnight at Yorkrakine
Rock which is between
Wyalkatchem and
Tammin in the WA wheat belt? Or somewhere else nearby.
Thanks
Terry

Terry, I think it would be OK. Looking at a Google search result I see other people's
blogs showing them doing that. There is a picnic site there.
You may find alternatives here on my blog about WA's
Granite Loop Trail. There is a link to a downloadable map too.

It will be cold out there though.

We called in there a couple of years back for a lunch stop. I don't recall seeing any signs saying you can't. There were quite a few biting midgie things that drove us nuts, but I think they hang around certain spots (like where we were) others there didn't seem to be bothered. Maybe they had repellent on. There's enough room for a van I'd reckon.

Hi Terry

Rock is day area only. Further south you can

Kokerbin Rock.

Terry,
MH is on the ball with this info, I would bow to her greater knowledge.
Take her advice, not
mine.

Kokerbin rock is a great camping spot, flushing
toilets, nice walks.
Make the most of it, the council is closing it later this year.

Kokebin
Rock campground will become day area only when the new
campground nine kilometres south at the former townsite of Kwolyin is opened.
Yorkrakine
Rock is
well signed as
no camping.

Can't believe they are closing
Kokerbin Rock. Why can't they just leave it alone. To much of this restriction after restriction going on. Whatever happened to free country???? It is all cock and bull.

Hi Phil
I recall a few years ago
Bruce Rock the word went around that it was to closed but I don't remember the where the pressure came from.
Bruce Rock Shire told me they would not close it unless there was alternative
free camping in their Shire. It seems they have been working toward this with Kwolyin.
The facilities at Kokerbin were recently upgraded too so I thought there may have been a change in plans, but no, they told me it will close when the alternative is open. They are not shutting us out, and there are still plenty of opportunities for
bush camping throughout the wheatbelt. The coastal strip is a different story.

I was talking to a councilor the other week and it is being changed to day use only.
This is to try to discourage people riding quads and motorbikes all over it.

They blocked off the vehicle access where people use to drive up onto
the rock some time ago.
The camping closure was reported about five years ago, and the driving access was closed then or earlier. However the
Bruce Rock Shire said they would not close their only free
campground until an alternative was in place. Kwolyin became the plan.

I had a look while we were there and there appears to be scheme water available.
It was while we were walking around the church and tennis courts, the Lady Councilor pulled up and had a chat.
She intimated the facilities would be similar to those existing at Kokebin
Rock. She felt it was a shame they were closing Kokebin, but necessary.
However it is expected to happen by christmas.

Thanks Crd. We were impressed with the newish upgraded facilities at Kokerbin, and surprised as it was destined to be day area only.

As a comment on the side, I see again some areas limited, closing. Our Oz community should campaign to support the retention of these areas, sites and tracks before there lost.
probably growing legals, costs, and vandals. 4x4 clubs do a good job of attempting to do this by working with CALM and so on- track and site maintenance .

As I've said in the past, I wish they'd get there priorities right. Why is legislation being made that penalises the majority due to the indescrepenicies of a minority. Address the issue by seeking to pull those doing the wrong thing into line. In time everything will be closed and nobody will be allowed to go anywhere. To which case, what is the point of having great
places if no one is allowed to go there??? We don't ban the use of cars because there is a minority that are drink drivers.

Good point Phil. Closing
places to tourists is taking the easy way out when (as seems the case with Kokerbin) its more-or-less locals on bikes and quads doing the damage. The tourists have gone back
home when the place is closed down and without forums like this they (the tourists) wouldnt even know of the closure, let alone complain or try to do anything about it. In the meantime the offenders just go and mess up somewhere else. Surely the local powers that be can do better - a whole lot better.
WE had a memorable morning tea at Kockerbin last year, where we met a couple of local women who gave us a wonderful insight into wheat growing in WA. At the time we were impressed with the new
toilets too.
Cheers,
Val

Hi Val. Thanks for the back up. This is how I feel. However difficult it maybe, and indeed is never going to be the easy option, but authorities need to do the right thing and chase the people breaking the laws etc. not infringing the rights off the law abiding public. Isn't this illegal itself in some way?????
