Hi Guys,
Has anyone bought an 'auger anchor' - that can be screwed into sand & soft dirt etc to which I can attach a winch for a self-rescue?
On-line I've seen a Lan-cor one made in New Zealand which looks very sturdy for NZ$495 + freight.
Does anyone make them in Oz?
Thanks

If conditions are right Mark, no shale or
rock those things are OK but I think just another expensive item to carry "in case of".
What is wrong with burying your spare wheel and winching against that ?

yep, I think you right. I've heard of that being done, and that is something I could easily do!
thanks

Another vote for Anchor right. There is a USA version their Army uses for fully loaded Hummers....
Cheers

The Australian army use an earth anchor which is a steel plate (cast iron) with eight or so holes and a D shackle. You drive steel spikes thru the holes, hook up and winch against that. Simple to make and use and effective.

thanks Phil.
yeah, I checked out Wright Anchors - theirs is a plough type dragged into the dirt/sand etc. A 4WD
shop in Midland WA advised me that some beach sands in WA are too loose to hold that style of anchor!
As I replied to racinrob I think I'll dig in a spare wheel!

Mark, from what I've seen of corkscrew anchers if the ground is solid enough for them to hold they are damn near impossible to screw in !
If you want a cheaper, lighter and more compact ground anchor try 3 shortened star pickets and a short bit of chain. Might need a high lift to get them out in really hard ground.
