Sascha H
Good Morning guys,
since a few weeks (after refuelling at
Normanton) I have some problems with my HZJ78 Troopy (1HZ without turbo)
I have a rattling noise around 1600-2200 revs and performace problems (acceleration and steep climbings)
I did the two fuel filters already.
We are the other strainers/meshs in the fuel system?
Can I
check for air in the fuel system without replacing the hoses against clear ones.
Today I will clean the airtake, too.
Have anyone the same problem or an idea?
Thanks a lot!
Cheers, Sascha

Perhaps it may be more advantageous to try the Toyota
forum rather than this generic one?

Sounds like a hard one to nut out but with diesels you can find out a lot with what sort of smoke your Exaust is sending out ( black ,white, bluey, colours ) that is all the tell tail signs

Why are you so sure it's fuel related.... more than likely it could be a coincidence.
Seek professional advice..... or you could do what most do, replace every part not related to the problem first and see if that fixes it!

Couldn't agree more olcoolone.
And then seek professional advice.......
But then again, professional advice costs,
forum advice not, unless you count replacing a gearbox ($5500) to solve a wheel bearing issue as a cost (advice followed by a member on another
forum).
You get what you pay for on Forums like this. Everyone is an expert in their own undies. Some even know what they're talking about. Most don't. So user beware.
Btw, the gearbox (surprise surprise) didn't fix the problem the
Forum member had. I guess it won't be log before someone sues a
Forum for offering incorrect and costly advice.

We get then coming into work after they have replaced everything.... had one the other day where someone followed the advice on a
forum.
Didn't solve the problem but atleast he has good spare parts that he knows work.... SOoooo maybe next time it might be that.

Sascha,
Did you fill one tank or both at
Normanton?
There are no other strainers apart from the mesh at each tank pickup but switching tanks should sort that out.
Was there any dirt/water in the filters when you changed them? What did the fuel look like?
Are you still running on fuel from the
Normanton fuel station? It's worth emptying one of your tanks, fill it with diesel from another servo and see how it goes.
If the above is negative, then replace the air filter if dirty. Then seek the advice of a diesel specialist - when were the injectors last done if at all? How many k's on the motor?

There is a small micro mesh filter in the injector pump where the fuel line enters.
Check that for particles.

Thanks Dave,
Yeah, I'm a bit reluctant to tell DIY people about it because you have to be pristine clean to touch it. And if its blocked then you've got to wonder why, given there are two filters upstream.
Cheers

I just filled the maintank at
Normanton.
Since ~1k km I'm running on fuel from
caltex.
There was just a little bit dirt in the primary fuel filter, the secondary was clean. No water.
The Troopy has 360k km.
The fuel, air and oil filter where done at
Darwin by a mechanic...2-3k km after that the rattling started.
We are at the tablelands to visit friends and it can't go faster than 100km/h...
The air filter looks like a new one.
I bought the Troopy 15k km ago. I don't know when the injectors has done.
Is it a big and expensive job?
Thanks!
Sascha

Phil G
X2
Very reluctant to provide information sometimes. Diesel, petrol and electricity don't mix
well, as
well as throwing into the equation people who ignore basic safety precautions. Cars can be death traps, and nothing scares me more than cavalier attitudes towards them. A little knowledge is so dangerous
Have never able to get my head around the lack of training/licencing required for anyone to hook up 2T and 10m of deadly missile to the rear of the car without an ounce of training.

What is the easiest way to get access to the strainer insinde the tank?
It seems that it has more power with the sub tank....now I want to have a look at strainer inside the main tank...then I will
check the mesh at the IP. (Just unscrew the fuel supply tube on top of the IP and try to get the mesh out?)
...a long way :-)

Thanks for the extra info Sascha.
To access the mesh filters inside each tank you have to remove each tank and lift out the pickup and sender unit from each. Some tanks have an access port in the floor - but I'm pretty sure there is none on the front main tank on the troopie - not sure about the rear sub tank , but lift up the floor mat and see. And to lift a tank out you'll need to drain each - at least they have a drain plug!
I think most likely you'll need to head off to a diesel mechanic. My daughter's HZJ80 had a similar episode at 260,000k - thought to be bad fuel - ended up needing the injectors serviced and it's run like a dream since. Cost about $800 all up from memory in
Brisbane.
The noise has me a bit puzzled. Just thinking about other possible causes with a 1Hz at that mileage. When was the timing belt replaced and when were the valve shim clearances last checked? When a motor is 17 years old, with 360k on the clock and an unknown service history, there can be a lot more causes for loss of power.

Thanks a lot Phil!
The timing Belt has done 20k km ago.
I have a service history back to ~250k km.
No valve clearence or some special things with the fuel supply.
How can I remove the main tank? remove just the four brackets with the straps around the tank?

Removing the tank should be straightforward. If there is rubbish in your tank, it should come out first when you drain it.
You might want a workshop manual for your next birthday!

I will sell the Troopy end of July, because I'm just for holidays in australia...
I'm a jet engine mechanic and can do nearly everything by myself...if I know how to :-)
