Planning to spend a year travelling around oz, towing a small van. Haven't bought either yet - would a ten year old Hilux dual cab 3.0TD cut it as a tow vehicle?

Can't see why it wouldn't do the job, provided the small van doesn't exceed the Hilux's towing capacity, and the tug is in good nick.

Given that Hiluxes tend to be a bit dearer, (I'm talking second hand) is there another make of 4WD considered to be equivalent or close to, that I might get a bit cheaper?

Buy a vehicle and van that will compliment each other. You don't have to go flash and keep up with the "Jonses".
I have '03 T/D Hilux and have just bought a small van weighing 1335 kg.
Picking it up soon so will let you know how it tows. Saw the same combination last year and spoke to the owner and he was happy. I aim to be a happy owner as
well.
Cheers

Without getting to biast or picky and if your not stuck on one brand there just about all as good as one another most are set up the same with independent front
suspension and rear leaf. I think it comes down to what vehicle you like the look of and if it's cabin space & driving position suits you a turbo would be the best option. You need to get an idea on how much vans weigh loaded &
check out the towing capacity of each vehicle your are going to look at they will be different & if it has a towbar fitted make sure it is not a light duty one quite a few come with 2 different sizes. I would suggest before you tow get the radiator flushed out correctly to eliminate heating issues don't tow in 5th gear a snorkle will help it breath better and set both van and car up so they sit level with each other no sagging rear end then you won't need those weight distribution hitch to compensate for a poor set up.

thanks for the great tips. I've travelled around oz alot with the ex, but never took much notice of how the vehicle was set up or what was required specs wise.
