Several years ago you didn't have to and I doubt much would have changed.
Call the subsidy hotline, they are very helpful.

I second clientsat - bought a prepaid with rebate based on the amount of time I spend out bush.
Also bought a pelican case to put it in and all posted to my house quick and easy.

Hi Peter
Last year I applied for and received a 50% Government subsidy and the phone was on a Pre Paid basis through InmarSat.
No monthly fees, very small and simple to use.
There are a number if per paid options to suit what ever best suits me.
Cheers
Stephen

I think under the grant you have to go on a plan as it is stated in the application ...... the pre paid I think is getting approved due to a loophole in the act.
Like most things not everything is water tight, this may be one reason why the subsidy is getting pulled shortly.... there will be a new subsidy that follows but more watertight.
Look at the other subsidies the government has been involved with over the years where the original concept was full of holes and allowed exploitation by consumers and retailers......
home insulation and solar to name two.
