Hi Has anyone camped at
kingoonya. What's it like? Looks desolate but that's ok. Need somewhere to
camp between
woomera and
coober pedy. Been to Glendambo and had bad experience with bus loads of dirty tourists. Any ideas greatly appreciated

Yes, I reckon you should stop at
Kingoonya. We have never seen "dirty tourists" there, thank goodness.

A bit more info than in my follow-up ...
Level
campground, big sites good for tent, CT, caravan, motorhome.
Toilets. Can't remember about water - we carried our own. Pub - but
check hours and availability of meals. (They were limited when we were there. Is it still open????)
We also have bush-camped on the road north from
Kingoonya going toward the Stuart Hwy. Past North
Well, about 15k north of
Kingoonya, I think, just south of a cross-track, on the LHS. A bit of old rubbish lying around (almost historic stuff) but it was easy to find a clear area for a Leave No Trace overnight.

Hey Theresa, Most people would only go to
Kingoonya if they were heading somewhere like
Gawler Rangers or following the train line across to
Googs Track. I agree with what everyone else has said about the
camping area, we found it great to escape a very windy night and had a great meal at the hotel. Fuel is available also but its via credit card pump, no way of buying fuel with cash.

Pub's been shut for over 12 months. Unlikely to open again from what I remember hearing somewhere.
"Camping" is in the flat area next to the
public toilets. Its within 100 metres of the railway line and lots of trains go through. Fuel (card only self-serve) is still available - run by the M-T community.
Can I suggest you
camp at
Lake Hart just off the highway. There's plenty of
places you can pull up or pitch a tent (not just the car park). Just follow the tracks. You will hear trains as
well but you're usually a couple of hundred metres away.

I should have mentioned that
Lake Hart is south of Glendambo. But towards
Coober pedy many of the posted rest areas are reasonable for an overnight stop. Hard to find anything good within about 50k of
Coober Pedy. There is a nice sanddune about 83km south of
Coober Pedy.

We went through there a couple of weeks ago and the pub IS open again. I think the re-opening celebrations are on at the end of Apr.

Gotta agree with Phil G I'm afraid Theresa. We were there about a year ago heading through to Eyre Highway via
Lake Everard. It didn't look like anything was open. There were signs that people were still living there, but the pub and fuel station looked like they no longer functioning. Not sure that it would be worth going all the way in there just for a quiet over-nighter. Not sure how often the trains go by. We were there long enough to stop and take a couple of pics, then we were on our way. Ray
