Having recently ordered a GX Prado 2003 we are considering tyre options. What do you think of Dunlop Grand Trek AT20's as the standard tyre fitted. We intend to travel north this year both on and off road and require tyres suitable for most applications. Keeping in mind we have plenty of highway driving incorporated. What is available in 17" BFG all terrain - are they a good choice. All opinions gratefully appreciated.
Thanks Deansa

Hi,
I fitted Mickey Thompson Tyre MTX on my new Prado. It stacked up well in recent magz test.
Performing overall better than BFG, and on par with Cooper, Cooper had an advantage only on gravel,MTX advantage on road, both equal on fire trails and sand.
I have done 20,000 with 40% on dirt/tails, getting ready to do 7 days in high country, spoke to my tyre dealer about need to go for a tuffer tyre for the trip and he knocked back the sale saying that with the reinforced walls, full width steel belts this is a fine tyre and that I should just go with it for the trip.

Hope this helps
Regards
Joe

David,
Saw a full page ad in 4WD Monthly for Mickey Thompsons. It lists the Radial MTX in 265/70R17. Toyo spec is 265/65R17. Sounds like a goer.

Joe,
I (and others I'm sure) would be very interested in your feedback on how these things go. Hopefully there will be a greater range of 17"ers out by the time I wear out the OEM Grand Treks.

Hi David,
I specifically asked dealer about a LT tyre for the planned trip as all the gear was going onto the vehicle making for a heavy load.(no trailers on this trip)He was confident that the MTX was up to it and I should stick with it. The tyre does not carry the LT spec on the wall, the advice is the reinforced side walls and full width steel belts will perform as good as an LT tyre.
So I trust he knows his product.
StevenL has it right,I have the 265/70R17

Hi Deansa,
I quickly checked the notes from article, and was wrong on BFG, They were the poorest performer on gravel and sand of the 3 tyres. BFG sligthy better on road and fire tails.
On Road. MT3...Cooper3...BFG3.5
Fire Trail MT4...Cooper4...BFG4.5
Gravel MT3...Cooper5...BFG2
Sand MT4...Cooper4...BFG3

Hi Diamond,
Yes the cooper total is best in this test, the coopers were not available when I made the selection.
