Hi all, I’m interested in talking to anyone who has done the 1HD-FTE conversion in a Patrol, particularly if done by Total Care 4WD. I saw one a while ago in 4x4 Australia and I also read a post on this
forum on the TONI project. Any problems since the conversion? I’m based in
Melbourne.
Cheers
Mike

The Patrols wheels would fall off with the shame of it all!

A few years ago someone did that conversion and called the vehicle "TONI". Perhaps if you do a search for that name on this
forum you may find the information.
Good luck

No , but my brother did to his 80 series in an effort to match my Patrol and have better range as
well, however while the conversion went
well it just didn't prove to be all it was cracked up to be.
We regularly
test things out in the dessert and
well he just couldn't get as far up the impossible hills.
He has now added chips and much better water intercooler and better exhaust and it goes pretty
well and pulls strongly but still can't match the power - a big
test is coming up over Anzac.
The patrol 4800 is still more powerful much quieter more user friendly and with lower overall costs and a lot easier to maintain.
The range is much the same and the fuel use cost is about the same as he can cruise at 12lt/100km whereas my petrol is about 14lt/100km.
Someone we know has just put a standard 4800 into a TD4.2 Patrol ute and this will be interesting to watch.

not realy fair to match the 4.2 TD to your 4.8 petrol.
the 4.2 would need a fair bit of work to get same grunt as the 4.8
a custom turbo, chip and intercooler as
well as a proper dyno tune..
youd have to look at a twin turbo diesel to match it.
then youd have a decent comparison to match it..
ive heard theyve done quite a few now;
and quite a few chev donks, the later block has been done in this country.
wally dewar is one.

Toni is still going strong and he absolutely loves it. He had a couple of teething issues at the start as it was the first one done but all sorted. Has the reliability of the Toyota engine and the tough as nails patrol drive line and he couldn't be happier. He also installed the toyota auto box behind it and with that and the drive line he has also commented on the awesome low range it has. It did cost him in the vicinity of 23K+ but it was going to cost him to 17k+ for a new ZD30 and his was a series 3 with low klms and extremely
well serviced so anybody that thinks the issues were solved in the series 3 they weren't. He does a lot of touring with it and his lovely wife and has not had any issues that have left him in trouble even while touring outback areas. Its some thing that you would need to really think about as its a lot of money to spend if you have any intentions of not keeping it till its wheels fall off so to speak. It required a lot of mechanical changes including diffs (I think it was exchanged for a petrol one) some thing to do with handbrake set up and also front diff issue due to housing been on opposite side to the Toyota transfer case etc (Im not 100% sure on this). For the owner the vehicle was worth nothing with a blown engine and he didn't want another time bomb in there his decision to go down the conversion path. The vehicle was off the road for a few months also but this could have been due to the fact it was the first of trial and error for this change over. I wouldn't do it personally but that's me, I couldn't be bothered with the head ache, I'd rather go and buy either an 80 series multivalve if I wanted live axle front and rear or go and buy a 100 series and be done with it yes its IFS but they strengthen them up (have an issue of cracking) and ok not as tough as a patrol drive line but unless your
rock hopping then this would suit me fine if I was after more grunt. I have petrol 4L prado and goes like the clappers and if driven with economy in mind can achieve 11.4 L per 100 freeway loaded and driving the speed limits, (this is not towing). Cheers............

Gday Kimba10
The hand brake issue was solved with different rear calipers that included a HB lever. No need to replace the entire diff assembly that way. The front diff lined up without any mods. Thanks for the rap. Renate likes your comment re her. lol

Hi Mike
you have read my blog. Yes I love my TONI and still do, we just got
home from a trip around
the block with 3 tonnes behind it & it never missed a beat over 30000Km. The car has covered 175000km since the conversion (at Total Care) & its as good now as when we did it.
Jason has now done 5-6 vehicles with this conversion including a guy in
Ballarat Vic that sent his up on a flat top to get it done just on my say so & Jason's reputation.
If you want to communicate with me send me an email: rencol2012@hotmail.com & I will try to answer any questions you may have.
Cheers Colin.
